Whine from monitors when DAW is open?

I have a USB souncard (Novation Nio) connected to Samson active monitors with RCA cables. As soon as I open a DAW (Cubase or Live), I hear a whine through my monitors.

When the DAW is closed, this whine is completely gone. What could the problem be? I was thinking a ground loop problem, but that the fact that the whine is only there when the software is open is odd.

Any ideas?

Seems like it could be a sound driver issue. Unplug your sound card and open Cubase using your default drivers. If it's still there, try reinstalling your sound drivers, then reinstall your DAWs if the problem is still there. That's my best guess.

What about music/video players like winamp? Tried them yet? Any different?

Try disabling your wireless card before starting the DAW if you are using a laptop.

I have an m-audio fast track pro connected to some yamaha hs80m's and I get the same thing. It's computer load being turned into sound since it changes when I do something like open a program, etc.

The monitors work fine playing through my cd decks. I think my computer doesn't have enough juice or something to keep up. I can't even work on a track in ableton with more than 40 channels- it just makes the monitors crackle and ableton starts hitting 80%+           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Can you post the specs of your PC?

In the case of Ableton, I've found that running all of my projects/sound libraries from my external hard drive significantly reduces my PC load, as the RPM of the external is as fast as a normal desktop and faster than almost all laptop models.

It's a decent computer; 4gm ram, old 1.83GHz processor though. I even bought a cooling dock cause it was getting hot, but that didn't help.

Good point about the external hd, I might check that out.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I think I've got some aura or some shit that makes computers 100x crappier when I touch them.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

oh, I'm running the fast track pro usb

I double checked it wasn't my speakers or cables, and when I hooked them up directly by xlr, they sound perfect.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Ahh, hmmm

That sound card has a reputation for being notoriously finicky and spontaneously screwing up like that.

Can the fast track pro use an external power source?

lulz

I had my sound card plugged in to a 1:4 usb port expander. Plugged it into it's own usb port and it's fine. I had it in its own usb port for a while and there was still a small hiss, there wasn't much more when I first plugged it into the expander, but I guess it got worse over a few weeks. I feel stupid that this was the problem, but I figured I would post it incase someone else does the same thing so they can avoid it           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

An update. I narrowed the interference to my monitor (screen). When plugged in, it whines. When unplugged, it's totally clean.

I plugged the monitor into a separate power point and while that's reduced the whine quite a bit, it's not totally gone.

PC specs: Q6600 2.4ghz, 4GB ram and Windows XP SP2
