I'm not a music creator, though from what I've heard :

Impulse Tracker
Cubase
Fruity Loops
Rebirth
AcidDrums

There is no one single software..
1.First you have to create loops (something im still stuck on )
Fruity Loops or
Get readymade loops
2. Then you have to get them sequenced
Acid Pro
Reason
Cubase VST
3. The Mastering and Editing
SoundForge or
Cool Edit Pro or
Wavelab

i think the best idea to start with is to use
Reason or Fruity Loops (i dont really recommend this but it is cheaper and incredibly easy to use), then move to cubase when you have more experience.

Cubase is too complicated for beginners I think....

if i had the chance to choose my siftware, when i started to make music, i would deffenatly choose Cubase, although i started with FruityLoops.
Fruity is good for learning but Cubase is more profesional and the desition to move from Fruity to cubase was easy but the execution was hard. it was hard to work with new program after you know very well how to work with another.
so start from the beginning with a professional program.           Don't Let Yourself Get Attached To Anything

I must say i agree with Arie Molecular,

im having those problems right now, tho i started with cubase but went over to learn the basics of music in flp, and now when i feel im ready to use cubase i feel so fucking mad coz i cant even make a decent baseline in cubase. its freakin frustrating.

so i recomend that you start with cubase coz u will earn so much more time when u going to get serious,

cubase is much much much better,
for example midi editing is why better, u can write midi and copy the file and in that next file u can change the midi data, that u can not do in flp, u can do so much more with cubase, but it will take u some time in the begining.....now i have to take the same trip over again to learn cubase, whish me luck

you can almost do everything in fl what you can in cubase but you have to learn how to do it in fl - there are things that so complicated to do in fl and so much easy to do in cubase

I use Reason 2.0, Acid Pro 4.0, Soundforge 6.0 and Fruityloops and that works for me.
