I assume you know what sound I'm talking about.
You know that very common Rubberish pitch modulated Saw sound.!?
I kind of know how to make this sound, but would anyone know, which synth back in the old was originally used for making this sound?
1 more question: when I make this sound in Albino, I modulate the pitch with the mod envelope.
But I somehow don't know how to make the sound longer and sweepier, instead of just a short stab.
Because if I use longer decay and susatin settings on the amp envelope, the sound starts nice but after it went thru the mod envelope it sounds like a regular Saw osc.
Thanks in advance. |

My guess is Nord Lead, but then again, you can achieve this sound with most synths. I have designed my favourite saw's with subtractor on Reason for example, some on VAZ modular.
As for your 2nd question, you should experiment with lower notes and filtering. I usually get the sound when in low notes, gives a crunchier feel since the note is more chopped, and you can hear the ADSR micro-adjustments better. I guess...

Use an LFO
or control the pitch manually |

make it with vanguard. open the preset goa3 or goa4, clean all effects on the preset, reverb, delay, transegate etc. write the notes as long as u want, than get the pitch and begin to play slowly with it, up down and u'll se the sound emergig. to make sweeps u need to turn on the Glide, make it like 16 or 32, But Not Instant nor too slow. write a long note, write a short note on another tone but that the same is in the time of the long one and u'll hear the magic SWEEEEEEPPP...
U can achieve this sound also with Discovery (vst replica of the nordlead) or with the Spiralator (a free crazy vst, search the forum for link!!). when u have the crude sound u can add it more contrast with a chorus, flanger or what ever effect u want...
hope it helps

i guess it could be EMS synthi A / 100 or some of the very old vintage synth back in the days used by some psychedelic rock band.

use modulation of some kind on the oscillator or filter or try to use unison, chorus, flanger, phaser or add second osc (if you`re using just one), detune it by few cents and / or add another modulation to it (most used are pitch and filter envelopes and also pwm / symetry)to add some motion to the sound

Cybernetica did a nice tutorial of how to do the psy squelch in Albino 2
------------------------------------
How to do it (In Albino2) :
First of all, choose two oscillators. Set the first one to "FM" and disable the "track" button on it. This will be the modulator for the second oscillator.
Choose digital waveforms and set all waveforms to "sawtooth". Transpose the first oscillator 3-5 octaves higher than the second one.
You can experiment with transposing one or two oscillators up and down, it will produce some very interesting results.
As a filter, use a bandpass with rather high resonance and cutoff between 1000 and 2000Hz, set the "track" value to maximum.
The trick is now to use an LFO to modulate the pitch of oscillator 2. Do the same with another LFO modulating the filter cutoff.
Sounds cool already, huh? Try using a phaser set to 100% "wet" and inverted feedback, it will sound really spacey that way. Set the "center" of the phaser to 3000-6000 and "feedback" and "stages" to a low value.
Add some long delay and reverb for extra spaciness

you are all wrong!
it came from a bone! it was a bone hitting another bone, the birth of the drums, rythm and sound.
if you have any doubts, watch 2001.

It's very easy to make that rubber sound... all it is is pitch modulation over time. I'm sure that any analog synth with pitch modulation and lfo can make it... I'd probably lay a guess to the Nords being some of the first synths used to make it, but you can just as easily make it with the virus or damn near anything..
