Ive been cutting down on the amount of hardware I use because I'm moving home soon and will have no room. I don't currently have a midi controller and have been looking at the current range. I want a very small controller with rotary pots, and no keyboard. Ive been looking at the CMC-AI by Steinberg but I heard it does not work with Cubase4, the Korg nanokontrol 2, presonus faderport and others..
I mainly just want to map VST instrument controls. Which is the best? |

The more money you'll spend, the better you'll be in a whole bunch of years.
However, you should analyze what you really need, and get something in accordance to that. The first thing I got was an EMU Xboard 25, with 25 keys and 16 knobs, and it was sufficient for a while. But with me evolving, the need for more control has came, and if I really think of it I could of been better off with something else.. or not.
You never know what you'll need in the future, so try setting up a plan and seeing what other values a specific controller will give you: does it have other functionalities? Is is programmable, and to what extent? Are there community patches / hacks and configurations for it? Does your software support it? Does it have options you never use (like finger pads, you might never used them before but you can always learn)
If you really only want 8 knobs, then go for something cheap -> a nano or akai mini for instance. In my experience, Behringer controllers tend to get all whacked up over time (pots stop responding or work in erratic ways, need to be re-map the control to get it back). I also see a lot of ICON equipment, but I have no experience, so tough luck.
Remember: take some time to analyze you needs and plan ahead.

After a bit of research I opted for the Novation Nocturn, Ive heard both good and bad things about the software but from what i've seen it looks like it fits my needs. Will post back with results in a few days:) |

I use the ultra-slim Behringer these days (I move often and cannot bring big stuff). Reason I like it is primarly the knobs that are really comfy, my old M-audio had so stiff knobs it was like moving the earth every time you wanted to change something. |
