Which RMS value to concentrate on?

I'mcurrently using the Har-Bal/Ozone (GM Complete CD Preset) workflow and being a somewhat entry level producer, I’m wondering which RMS level I should look for?

I use Adobe Audition for analysing statistics, and for a test mix I’m working on, the total RMS is -18.37 while the average is -22.05. Which level do I want to take down to -10/-11db? The average or the total?

Wanting to get the total RMS down to -11db, I subtracted 11 from 18.37 (7.37) and set my Ozone Loudness Maximiser threshold to -7.3db which got me a Total RMS of -12.65 and an Average of -15.53.

While not exactly the loudest, I think it’s still pretty loud but I’m wondering if I’m looking at the RMS levels correctly. Am I doing this correctly? Should I use the average RMS as a starting point or the total RMS? Which RMS do I want to be:

"• Between -10 and -12 RMS, great for most commercial songs
• Between -16 and -12 RMS, great for softer compositions" ?

The average or the total?

Thanks in advance!

I know this is a question better suited for the Har-Bal forums, but while I wait for my registration to be approved, I thought I'd ask it here.

probably better for psy, in today's mad world of loudness maybe even up to -8 at some extremes.

Seeing as I can't edit the original post, here it is again with a bit more depth.

I’m currently using the Har-Bal/Ozone (GM Complete CD Preset) workflow and being a somewhat entry level producer, I’m wondering which RMS level I should look for?

I use Adobe Audition for analysing statistics, and for a test mix I’m working on, the total RMS is -18.37 while the average is -22.05. Which level do I want to take down to -10/-11db? The average or the total?

Wanting to get the average RMS down to -10db, I subtracted 10 from 22.05 (12.05) and set my Ozone Loudness Maximiser threshold to -12 db which got me a:

Minimum RMS Power: -50.88 dB -50.99 dB
Maximum RMS Power: -3.9 dB -3.96 dB
Average RMS Power: -12.91 dB -13.3 dB
Total RMS Power: -10.47 dB -10.79 dB

While a professional track from the same genre (Silent Sphere - Seperated Minds had these stats.

Minimum RMS Power: -78.05 dB -74.7 dB
Maximum RMS Power: -4.74 dB -5.12 dB
Average RMS Power: -10.92 dB -10.95 dB
Total RMS Power: -10.16 dB -10.19 dB
Actual Bit Depth: 16 Bits 16 Bits

While not exactly the loudest, I think it’s still pretty loud but I’m wondering if I’m looking at the RMS levels correctly. Should my Minimum RMS be so different from the professionally mastered tracks, RMS? -50 compared to -70…

Am I doing this correctly? Should I use the average RMS as a starting point or the total RMS? Which RMS do I want to be:

• Between -10 and -12 RMS, great for most commercial songs
• Between -16 and -12 RMS, geat for softer compositions ?

The average or the total?

-10dB of what though? Total RMS or Average RMS? Or do you raise the Average RMS to increase the total RMS?

if you want maximum sound quality use K-20 metering while mixing and then at mastering set the rms where it s sound good to you but not too far from realsed tracks

It really depends on the mix. Some mixes can't be pushed beyond -12 dB. Other mixes can be pushed up to close to -5 dB. *evil grin*

But don't worry about RMS levels. Worry about how your mix sounds.

i don´t know if i´m right... but i think that the difference between the maximum and minimum RMS on boths tracks stands for how much 'silence' and 'signal' interval wich one have...

and for mastering you should aim on the average RMS power of yout track. Another mastering tip is try to master the track at a higher sampling rate and resolution.

cheers

totally

use your ears, if you want it LOUD then push it hard through your limiter, hard as you like. It'll soon start to sound like shit, then you can back it off. pretty simple really, don't stress too much mate

peace
presto!
