I used PC in my home studio for the last 5-6 years, as did my partner in crime.

Sure we mostly worked on creating heavy metal and rock, but I always found them to be really unreliable, only reason I stuck with them was I was bit concerned of the move to Mac an re-learning everything.

Well my partner in crime got a Macbook earlier this year just as a test run and it has been awesome. Never has a laptop run more smoothly, been able to handle multiple programs running at once and mostly be stable on the road!!

I"m buying one of the new Macbook Pro's soon... out here I'm looking at a 15" with 4 gig of RAM + Ableton Live for $1900 U.S.

Plus the upgrade to the next O.S is out in October I believe and will be approx. $15U.S to upgrade.

I highly doubt Windows 7 will be that cheap or reliable

Mac is definitely worth the cash.

I am looking forward to a machine that will go the distance for 4-5 years including road trips, rather than a new one every 12-18 months like the PC machines!

i think mac is most marketing, and is only good for those who use logic. I have a pc for a long time, the processor is kinda old but if you keep it clean (porn sites are the plague as you say) it just works beautifuly at least for me. I dont have an idea when i`ll be able to change my lap, maybe i`ll just add some ram but when ill change it i want to go for an asus that is water proof hehe, perfect for raves.           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

I doubt it.

A product used by some of the most technical trades in the world would not be their no.1 choice if it failed to deliver the goods.

It comes down to one thing:

PC is what most people grow up with and therefore, like all humans, they mostly choose to stay with what is familiar.

Those that are willing to take a small risk and try something new might be pleasantly surprised, as I was.

Believe me, I used to think I was a Mac hater until I seriously used on.

When you buy a mac you pay for 2 things when it all comes down, the design and the OS.

IF your looking for most bang for your bucks check out the new AMD Phenom II cpus with 4 cores, 350€ you get cpu, a great mobo and 4 gig of ram. Intel I7 would be the thing to go for if you want the fastest available but you pay double for it as well.
I use the phenom II 920 cpu and still haven´t maxed it out yet and the projects are pretty big now           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

Have you bought PCs on the streets built by crackheadz that thinks ESD is a new drug ? I have never had any issues with OS instability, only time was when i had a defect Mobo which was returned to the seller.
And yes i do believe that win 7 is going to be that upgrade that vista was supposed to be for XP. finally M$ listens to the users and gets them what they want!

First, all my pc's were store bought and ranged from Sony to Asus to Toshiba's and the only good one I built with my co-producer.

I also said the OP should try both Mac and PC in store, I only defended Mac when it was attacked and only used personal experience Mr Vegetal :-D

Lastly, I know a number of experienced computer programmers who had huge issues with Windows 7 Beta, most saying these issues were worse than ones they'd had with Beta and early versions of Vista. Microsoft will never put customers before money. It's like saying America will put the Arabs before oil, ain't ever gonna happen!

The OP should read all possible magazines, reputable sites and def. not the users and abusers here.           I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy!

if i to choose between core quad or i7, i would go for quad + second display. i strongly believe it is much more usefull then an extra billion of these modern ultrananoherz stuff. the same with ddr 2/3 and its ammount. after saving on extra modern top line computer hardware you can buy some rack blofeld or cubase 5 or i dunno.. treat the room a bit, which is cooler then the most modern computer

I have a couple of laptops, one is 11 years old and still functional.
And that have been through many wet and dusty parties, travelled around half of Europe and India on a bike and had a rougher life than most laptops.
I stopped gigging with it a couple of years ago and replaced it with a machine that is some 5-6 years old.

If you like Macs that is cool, but I just don't understand why Mac users constantly have to skew the facts to their favour.
A Mac is a PC when it comes to hardware and I'm afraid that the idea that they should last four times longer just because they have an apple on the lid is wrong.
Looking at return rates Mac is not set apart from other manufacturers.

Obviously you had bad experience with PC's, and sure there are some shit PC's that uses cheap low quality components. But comparing a €500 PC with a €1500 Mac is hardly sensible.

That is another example of skewing the facts.
A quick look at prices for a DELL Studio 15.6 shows that you get a machine with a T9400 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, LED display, 320GB HD and a 512MB HD4570 graphics for €1090.

A Mac with same CPU, 4GB RAM, LED display, 320GB HD and a worse graphics card with shared memory will set you back €1720.
And then you don't even get an ExpressCard slot, which means that it would for my purposes be useless.
So if I would like to go the Mac route it would cost me €2370, and then it's bigger than I would like and doesn't actually offer any advantages for me over the DELL for €1090.

It used to be the case with Apple notebooks that they offered acceptable value if one of the models fit your purposes. Anyone claiming otherwise today is in denial or just not keeping up with pricing.
Pretty much all electronics have gone down in price due to the financial crisis, but not Apples products.
If you like the design and the OS you might want to pay overprices to get a Mac, but from a hardware perspective they are without a doubt extremely overpriced.

Now the topic isn't about what Mac to buy...and I very much agree with makus.
It's not easy to max a Quad and the i7 is not worth it yet unless you have an unlimited budget or have everything else you might want for you studio already.
I would go for a Q8200 or maybe even a Q6600.
The Q6600 is a better overclocker and I'm running mine constantly at 3.2 GHZ and then it's 100% stable and the voltage is not even upped, so heat is not an issue.
But the Q8200 will use less power and generate less heat, so if you want to make your machine as quiet as possible the Q8200 can be a better choice.

Don't bother with DDR3 and 1333MHz RAM, and get a Q8200.

Unless you are doing serious overclocking 1333MHz RAM is overkill for a FSB of 1333MHz. Since it's Double Data Rate 667MHz will be able to keep up with the speed of the system bus and you will not notice a difference compared to using DDR2 800MHz which still gives you a decent margin for a modest overclock.

That will leave you money for a decent chassi and PSU. I'm not familiar with the ones you have there, but neither are familiar quality brands.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)
