have one built to your own specs!!
i think it would be more cost-effective!
check for component performance and compatibility!!

Good Luck!!

like elad wrote: a quick widescreen LCD (<5ms) is useful for sequencers a with horizontal user interface (like cubase).

and pay attention to get a solid mainboard (like asus or gigabyte) - since this is the base to build on.

cheap mainboards = waste of time & money.

also - the power supply unit should not be under-estimated on actual generation PCs:
multi-rail design for optimal stability, and a modular cable management for less cable-salad inside the housing.          http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject

mac is overpriced crap ... and OSX runs fine on PC hardware (SSE3 CPU required), too.

if you only have little clue and check the design of the USB-subsystem on a macbook "pro" ...
you will clearly see that the product is focused on consumers with even less clue.

i mean, with all the MIDI/audio -over-USB ...
native USB 2.0 ports at their full bandwidth became essential.

i'd compare intel i7 / amd phenom II like this:

intel cpu do faster calculations and are more expensive.
amd cpu do faster memory operations and are affordable.          http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject

even a single core 2GHz cpu + 1gb ram is enough to open a few tracks.
it always depends on how your projects look like (or will look like)

quadcore is always good - but 32bit os can't recognize all the 4gb ram.          http://www.myspace.com/realtimeproject

Yeah, Macs aren't worth all the extra you end up paying. I recommend building a computer yourself. You can find plenty of guides online; and it is actually quite easy. Not to mention that once you do it, you'll feel that you truly understand how your computer works. This makes it much easier to swap out parts later.

Get the newest Intel chipset
Quad Core cpu in this chipset (speed of cpu matters less than the series)
4GB of RAM is just fine
USB Audio Interface (if you're doing all soft/vst synths, then get something cost effective like an M-Audio Fast Trak USB Pro)

You can get whatever you want though, that's just what I would recommend at the moment.

Also I highly recommend Cubase on PC.

If you are running less powerful hardware, you can render out your channels to audio so you can deal with fewer tracks at once.

would use PCI or PCI-E audio interface (unless it's a notebook computer)

... this way it responds with a lower latency and you have one more usb port left for other devices.

for example:

the best advice i have is work in old school methods

music done on computers only since atleast 15 years now.. so if P1 could do it you can do it too.. the more power you have you will only tempt to work in more resource hog ways           www.sattelbattle.com

build your own, just think of the configuration you want and research for quality. I think if you buy a pre-build you will spend much more money.

As said, get a recent intel processor with at least 6mb of cache, i think 4gb o ram is enought, as if not you can easily update later, and a good motherboard (go for asus) i think that is the basis           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``
