monno - have you checked Adobe Audition 3?
It has a real clear output, also it strikes me as louder than both, Cubase, FL studio and Reason.
I really hope they will release a Audition 4 soon with some updates and bug fixes

I think Studio One has quite good potential. It has a realtime engine like ableton and a timeline based sequencing like cubase but again a nice one screen GUI and top notch programmers behind the scenes. The plugins are fantastic as well. Its made by former Nuendo developers. I think as soon as it gets a surround bus i will change over from Nuendo.

Uhhh audition i had forgotten that it is also a multitrack environment...I used that program a LOT back in my pc days pre Adobe´s buy out.
Now i see many years later, and in spite of almost everything else Adobe being available for mac, those spiteful #?"€%# still have not released a multi platform version. I do so love certain aspect of that program that are truly unique, but i never used it for anything else than a stereo editor, so i have no experience with how it sums (yet) The price is decent and i assume being owned by Adobe has not screwed things up code- wise, so once it comes out for mac i am there card in hand.

Try as many as you can, find one that seems easier to understand than the others, thats pretty much what I did. They all are basically the same thing, basically just making 1s and 0s into music, the difference is the interface, Cubase is liek a multitrack recording suite, Reason is like a hardware rack, Live is like a loop sampler/sequencer, Renoise is a tracker interface for those (like me) familiar with trackers. Ive tried every one Ive mentioned and Renoise has always been able to do things that others aren't, faster (tho to the uninitiated the interface is sometimes counterintuitive).
