2: The original Nord sound.
2X: the 2 sound engine, through better DACs (have not had a go so can't comment)
3: Different Sound Engine, does not sound like the 2 + more cash. The guy I make tunes with, Panos, has the 3 and we have only used it for FX sounds. It don't sound bad at all, it just does have the same edge the 2 and 1 had.
You can't go wrong with any of 'em to be honest. I'd get the 2 (actually I'd get the Modular!). The cheapest of all and I could not fault it its converters/sound engine in the old Dado, Logic Bomb and Hux Flux tunes that gave me religious experiences on the dancefloor.
Peace out.

modular is pain in the ass (especially comparing to such easy-to-use synths as 2, 2x and 3).

you can make a nord 2 with the modular and way more but it s maybe a pain in the ass yes (have no idea)with the software and the 4 midi it need , nord 2 is great to program ... if you want that the nord 2/2x might be a better choice |

Haha, that would be pretty bad-ass
I can throw in my vote for the 2x, it's the synth that see's the most use in my studio because it's so straight-forward to use and you can tweak something useful out of it in seconds!
My friend Lauge has the Nord 3 and it's rarely used beyond sending midi to the other synths. It's good and everything, but it lacks the punch and oompah of the 2/2X in my opinion. Whether or not to buy the 2X over the 2 I can't really comment on. I've tried the 2 but didn't notice a huge difference in sound. Some say the 2X is a bit brighter, and I think it does have a little more bite in some of the FM, but it's pretty subjective. The 2X also has 4 more voices and more memory for storing patches...
In the end they're all good synths, but if I were you I would go with either 2 or 2X.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I've come across a well maintained nord lead 1. Anybody used one?

There is very little difference between the 1 and 2
Differences lie in polyphony and the modulation section (maybe fm is limited or non existing)
Anyhoo for that classic nord sound a 1 will do just as good. V.2 is but a slightly updated version. The 2x on the other hand has upgraded converters and a considerable internal memory space for patches (memory cards for the old ones are very pricey)
Where the 2x oddly loses out to me is in the updated converters, they simply sound too clean to me now. As to V3 i consider it more or less overpriced and a hunk of junk. Everybody i know who had one had it break down on them so far (repairs are impossible as it is discontinues and has almost everything mounted on one board)
Clavia modulars are not for everyone, but they are the most flexible digital synths i can think of. Not at all the WYSIWYG interface the lead series sport.

the main difference between the nord 2 and 2x is the envelopes and the top end of the sound
the nord 2s envelopes are exponential meaning that they are far more percussive (and better imo) and its sound is a bit grittier and less clinical
i would advise the nord 2..especially for psi or goa
there are plenty of debates on this matter
so a quick google will come up with plenty of pros and cons
