If you use samples, in which situations do you put them into an audio track of the sequencer, and in which situation into a sampler or sample based synth? Which tools (plugins, etc..) do you prefer for doing this?
I feel like I don't like samplers at all and would use them only if I have to (if I need a multisample patch, that is a patch with different sample for every different note, and maybe for different velocities). I have been using Halion and Kontakt and this is the outcome of my current thinking.
But I have difficulties in deciding that is it better to use some simple sample player (like simpler of Ableton Live), or put the samples directly to tracks. I think that if you need to play the sample at different pitches, then a logical choice would be a sample player. But in other situations, which do you prefer?
I like simpler very much, but the only thing I would like more in it is to have such volume (and maybe even pan/filter) envelopes, where you can click the sample waveform with mouse and set envelope points directly to the waveform. Most of applications where ADSR approach is better I do with synths.
I have really difficulties understanding why there are so few synths that have this kind of envelopes, the only ones I have run into are Absynth, Rapture, maybe Alchemy. Albino 5-pole envelope is close but not really the same. I have done music with trackers and for me it seems much more logical to draw the envelope than to think which attack value you need to get a desired effect.
So if you know any simple, and reliable sample players with such drawable envelopes, or maybe even sample synths, I would be really interested to know

Are you doing the mastering for them? if so spam us with some examples of it!
I usually use audio tracks simply because I don't have a nice simple sampler for cubase yet. And still have to find one really. Don't like most of them because the have way too many options and or sample banks. A simpler or sampler from Ableton would be great to have as a simple vst plugin for cubase. Any ideas?

Had Tim Healey here last weekend, he's just spent a week in the studio with Felguk. Apparently they use no VSTis at all, but sample their Virus and Moog straight into the arrange window. In the end it's whatever lets you get the results you want, at the best possibly quality, in the easiest manner. For me, there are advantages and disadvantages to both ways of working with samples and audio, and I use a combination of the two.

retrun to the source hehe it remind me a killer partie around paris...gonna check what music these guys are doing these days.
about sampling agree it all depends what you want to do...i use both too ,one advantage i think is not much used in psy is to use all your cpu power just for one sound and then use the sampler,
that way you can have your favorites leads/bassline/fx whatever you want in sampler instruments ,it can be usefull and it s good for layering and other tricks |

yeah nice topic! its all about good workflow/best results.
i use (cubase) battery for HH, kicks, snares, claps, snares, bongos, crashes ... because of the nice velocity display and its more manageable with a drum-map.
nerver tried it on leads, why should i? battery sucks out my cpu power heavily...
for ramps, pads i also dont use a sampler, i love the simple cubase functions (fade in/out, sample length...), with this i dont have to automate to much. if i have lot of automation going on, on my samples, i bounce it one more time to make it clearly arranged and it saves more cpu.
cheers

Most of my audio I use on audio tracks and like orgytime already mentioned I 2 prefer to bounce or resample again when there is too much with inserts and automation going on etc.
Than I like often to use kick in kontakt (can be generated with psykick before),sometimes bass in sampler or just a percussive element I want to freak out with later in the arrangement.Often orchestral samples in sampler. But the most are on audio tracks .

I like samplers, as they give me the possibility to create choke groups. control what samples are allowed to cut another, in other words how many samples are played simultaneously.
another advantage is the ability to instantly change samples around, preauditioning a different snare without readjusting hits on a simple audio track.
want an lfo as mod source, manipulating start- and end-points of samples/loops?...
if you like tracker-like editing of stuff (still miss my drumgrid from jeskola buzz with sample retrigger) you could have a look at fxpansion guru. or for that matter rewire buzz into your favourite host. there's also an impulse tracker-style vst, revisit...)
nowadays it's all about drum racks in live, as it works in perfect harmony with my novation launchpad.
