Which instrument to use for subs?

Should either kick or bass (but not both) be used to occupy the sub frequencies? ie, if you don't cut your kick below 40hz, should you you cut the bass at that region?
Also, can subs be used for pacing in a track? Would the subs of a KBBB bassline be a more assaulting, visceral feeling to one listening on a big rig, while a kick's subs will result in a steady, solid physical sensation?
Or should everything just be cut under 40hz? |

yes, imo.
but no must, everything is possible. really depends what kind of kick and bass and what you want to make.

no, imo. but lot of people do (especially on bass)
i think the most important thing is to avoid muddieness and conflicts between kick and bass. so maybe it fits if you cut the subs of one of them. |

all combinations can sound good (bass or kick with sub or both) usually i remove few db around 50hz-60hz on the bassline and boost a bit the kick their, but it all depends about the sounds you are using. |
