If you're serious about learning.. expect YEARS of dedication and hard work. An instrument isn't something to take lightly, its fun, but if you really want to get good... TIME + EFFORT = Slowly Better
I've been playing the piano and having lessons for over 10 years and still pushing myself to get better.
The guitar is, well, fucking COOL. But limited in its input to midi and sequencers. If you're going to produce, a keyboard would be a more useful option
If you learn the keyboard/piano you have the ability to play synths, see scales easier (some may debate this, but I compose all my melodies on a piano before swapping to another instrument) It just seems easier?
As for your beginners music production book,

This really helped me a lot. Covers just about everything to an intermediate level. Lots of good stuff on the cd that comes with it too.
Note that there are loads of great producers that make music, great melodies and just generally know what sounds good without ever learning an instrument. A basis in musical knowledge VERY useful, and can be a timesaver when composing, but I wouldn't say its the be-all-and-end-all to getting better.
