what about austria? maybe there are not so many labels and artists, but there are many dj's and the people there really like what they are doing, from the partygoer to the organiser and the owner, with extra-low prices in entrance-fees and drinks (like 10€ entrance, 3€ beer...) and lots of plur and good vibes.. it's not done for the money (obviously) but for the fun and the music. really unforgetable. plus there is no government "tool" that is interrested in these events except the IRS, so no shut downs or raids

hey, dont know in which part of austria you live, i live in the west (tirol) and we have lots of problems here, incl. shut downs + fucked up people .... the scene there is almost death (exept some little underground event once in a while)
ok in the east you have lots of parties but i dont think the "vibe" is that great as you mentioned ... fortunatelly there are lots of exeptions as always in live

if you wanna see good vibe, then go to bolivia!

Origins

Psytrance (also known as Goa Trance) has roots stretching back to the 1961, when the Portugese colony of Goa was forcibly annexed by India. Soon afterwards, hippies and various other people from Europe and North America seeking spirituality of various sorts headed there on vacations, especially for elaborate winter rituals on the beaches, combining Christmas rituals of the Portugese Catholic heritage with Hindu ceremonies. Because of the nature of the festivals, the music tended to last very late, with sunrise being the focal point of the event. The expatriates started having their own parties on the beaches, year-round, playing music of various sorts over the decades. At first it was mainly psychedelic rock of various sorts, but by the early '80s, electronic body music and German industrial music were being introduced. By the early 1990s, a local genre had developed, and the scene had become even more international, involving many Japanese and Israelis, in addition to the Europeans, Australians, and Americans that had been there before.15

Because of the heat and humidity, djs in Goa tended to use cassette tapes instead of vinyl records. As a result, beatmatching was very hard, and many of the oldest djs working in the genre don't bother trying at all (for instance, Goa Gil, who brought the music to northern California, whom I saw on Halloween last year). To ease this situation, psytrance developed a tradition of having relatively long atmospheric portions in each track, which allow one to easily mix two tracks of different tempos without having them clash. By the early 1990s, DAT tapes became common, but it is only recently that CD mixers with tempo controls have become available, and the music has already been shaped by this formative environment.16

The genre's origins in India (especially among spirituality tourists) explain much of the decorations and imagery associated with the music, as well as some of the scales that are quite popular. However, the sounds themselves probably owe more to the association of the music with hallucinogens of various sorts. While mainstream trance music is often associated with the drug ecstasy, psytrance is more associated with hallucinogens. (The “psy” in “psytrance” is normally said to stand for “psychedelic”, though it is also associated with the words “psychoactive”, “psychotropic”, “psychic” and anything else connected with the mind or brain.17) It's never clear what percentage of the fans are under the influence of some substance or another at the parties, though people who dance well past dawn may be taking advantage of something or other to keep them going. The effects of the drugs may be one reason why this genre of music focuses so much more on timbre and non-pitched sound than on melody, harmony, or rhythm, as most other music does. The basic tempo is significantly faster than most mainstream trance music, and this has been attributed to the fact that constant sixteenth notes at a tempo of 145 bpm gives a rhythm almost identical to that of the naturally occurring alpha waves in the brain.18

Psytrance played an important role in the development of trance music of all sorts around the world. Trance first emerged in the early 1990s, as a dark sound coming from German and Belgian producers. This almost broke through to the mainstream, but it was only when producers like Sven Väth and Paul Oakenfold started adopting the sound that had developed in Goa that it started to take off. However, Goa trance and psytrance were pushed aside (as was the original darker German trance) by brighter “progressive trance”, which has been perhaps the most popular form of electronic music in the United States since the late 1990s.19 Since the mid-1990s, the music has continued to develop, now largely in places like Israel, Europe, Japan, and the United States, and thus it is now often referred to as “psytrance” rather than “Goa trance”.20

Despite playing this important role in the development of electronic music, particularly that played at “raves” across the United States, psytrance is relatively unknown outside of its fans. At the same time, it is a very international style of music, with important artists coming from all corners of the globe. (In the four tracks I analyzed, Deedrah is a Ukrainian-Italian man, brought up in France, and working in Ibiza, Spain; Infected Mushroom is a pair of Israeli men who also have independent projects; Hallucinogen and Sheyba are British. While at these parties just in Northern California, I have met people from Spain, Russia, Israel, and the Netherlands.) This makes the fans feel like part of an exclusive community, which at the same time transcends national boundaries.

Thus, although psytrance has already once “emerged” and “disappeared”, it is still a thriving genre in locations around the world. Perhaps at some point in the future it will have more direct influence on other popular musics. But as long as it remains tied to its particular style of parties, it is unlikely that it will catch on among large audiences.

Hedonic Tantra: Golden Goa's Trance Dance Transmission
by Erik Davis

In the early 1990s, I became aware of the growing psychedelic undertow of dance and electronic music. With the exception of the Bay Area, the United States was largely out of step with this aspect of the techno scene, and it was only through stray clues — a boast by a British backpacker, liner notes on an import ambient CD — that I first heard about Goa. When I interviewed Orbital for Spin, Paul Hartnoll confirmed the rumors: on the west coast of India, in the ex-Portuguese state of Goa, an old hippie haven hosted raves every winter, massive techno freak-outs that were less parties than rites of passage. These parties rode the cutting edge of psychedelic techno music — what we now call psy-trance — and they attracted New Age traveler types as well as the raver elite. Some suggested that Goa was the true source of raves, or at least of their spiritual essence, that ineffable gnostic intoxication whose articulation usually leaves outsiders in the dark.

Goa trance (often referred to as Goa or by the number 604 - G = 6, O = 0, A = 4) is a form of electronic music and is a style of trance music. It originated in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the Indian state of Goa and is distinctive, as most forms of trance music were developed in Europe.

Goa trance is closely related to the emergence of psychedelic trance during the latter half of the 1990s; however, the distinction between the two genres is largely a matter of opinion (and they are considered by some to be synonymous, some say that the psychedelic trance is more "metallic" and the goa is more "organic".) These two are, however, sonically distinct from other forms of trance, distinguished largely by the unique sounds they use. In many countries they are generally more underground and less commercial than other forms of trance. The goa sound is more likely to be heard at outdoor parties and festivals than in clubs. The first compilations or albums where the Goa trance sound could be heard, distinguishable from "normal" trance music, is likely Dragonfly Records "Project II Trance" and its successor "Order Odonata".

some poeple which iv talk to in the past say trance or goa trance in greece started in 93- 94 ..im in the idea that some greeks like dj Stavros.gr and his family and many other that were living in india in the 90s brought the music here to greece but was not that common, dj nikos says he started end of 92-begging of 93, as i remeber then, lorry in tessalonki started with rigas 92-93 cose they did the 2 day party with nikos liquid love in halikidiki then ..so even if it did start in 92 -93 to most or some what are the chances the older people which were greek living in india to know this music from 1990 since it was being made but only on tapes and dat and was not releast to labels cose there were none..since the people in india discoverd this experiece the israels won the respect by using there mind to make exellent music, in 94 i remeber most artists and people were traveling to israel to see the music in parties they loved so much .know countries like brazil and japan do bigger parties cose there population is big and the people in the sceene is big so they get 100.000 in festivals so they can aford good deco and big artists. the only good festival ever held in greece was samotraki dance festival ,but even then diferent years more people in parties then,,know orginizers like eternal motion try to do samotraki mite do even better i think cose they have the money to support it ,and they try in tessalonki as detox tryes inn athens and iraklis mindphaser also ,but the sceene is not that people dont try its the sceene wont help us or any 1 ,if we try to do something good the .... will close it..or many reasons ,sinse i love this music from the 1st day i heard it im still in it and all my freinds and buddies left this sceene 4to 5 years ago..even if i dont do parties and play in forest 1s small or in other countries,i still feel not losing the sceene from below me.know what happens to parties and they put big fees artists ask big amount in greece like they do in other countries also,,and with 400 or 500 people we are exact the party..its not 2000 or 3000 to say we did good,,any way my wish is for parties to continue in greece from who ever can do them. things will never change as they is to much bla bla and stuff and not so much music ant more. but at least all will 1 day understand all together is power in a country ,each person to show off is week ,if all orginizers were strong together the country would be up..country is more important that 1-2-3 people. so all the best on all ure future parties..

The number one for alot of time was Israel for sure.
But the last 4 years Japan showed what they are capable of doing. And they achieved that with unity between the psy-"paragontes" of Japan.

i was talking about vienna and its suburbs and other areas in the north(waldviertel etc) and in the south(wiener neustadt, graz etc), and there was never a problem, or a shut down or fucked up people... maybe in clubs in the city they have to close early in the morning and it attracts weird non-scene ppl too sometimes, because it's in the city, but the events outside of the city are perfect. i was never in tirol though so it may be a totaly different experience there...
