Hello to everybody...
I was wondering which are the benefits of a 64 bit cpu system in the area of audio.Does it worth to move on from a 32 bit system?
Will I have a better sound enviroment in general?
Thank you.

If you are talking about x64 systems then you wont have better sound environment. but windows and application performance will increase. also some software doesnt suppor 64 bit yet (starting with adobe flash).

Mainly you will be able to access more RAM & if an application has been designed to take advantage of it then it will perform better.
For the moment among sequencers (AFAIK), only Cakewalk Sonar can take advantage of 64bit.

pointless unless you are forced to use WinXP64 or Vista and you must absolutely use 4GB of RAM. If that is the case I would see that as a bigger problem. |

Reaper supports x64 for about half-a-year or more...

Ok..One more thing...
If I setup a pc with vista 64 and cubase 4 and all the 64bit drivers for my hardware, will I still be able to run my existing plugins on it?
Thanks...

But you can install pretty much and x86 program and it will work fine, so how are vst's different? Or is it because if you would use Sonar (or other sequencer that supports 64bits) in 64bit mode, the vst's will also have to be compatible with 64bit to run under it? |

Open Task Manager while producing, and look at the process for your DAW. Only if it's consuming near 2gb of memory(assuming you have atleast 2gb installed) for the process should you even consider switching to 64bit, otherwise, you're just asking for trouble. I have a Phenom II 940 with 4gb of ram running 32bit Linux and Reaper, my max CPU useage in a completely huge and ridiculous project is 30%, and ram useage for Reaper barely goes over 1gb, I see no reason why I'll ever need another hardware upgrade or 64 bit, pretty much the only people with a need for 64 bit and > 4gb memory are people like Don Davis who do classical/film scoring stuff with huge multisampled instruments.....
EDIT: 2gb of memory refers to the amount one process can use in 32bit, even if the machine can address ~4gb. You can use the /3g bootswitch to allow a process to use up to 3gb, but there is a performance penalty for doing so. |
