actually i disagree with the general view here

i dont think u have to wait for inspiration to strike at all... not for this game. if i was john williams or something i'd probably need to wait for some incredible melody to come to me, but honestly, i dont find dance music (thats psy, dnb, breakbeat, anything) musical enough to warrant any huge melodic or emotional inspiration

i mean come on, its usually got a bassline wich just bangs away on one note for 8 minutes, teamed up with a big kick drum bashing away on every beat for 8 minutes, and a few whoosing noises every now and then...

so, i find i can sit down and sequence more or less any series of notes for my bassline out of thin air... add a kick drum and a few hi-hats... then spend some time getting the right sounds for these elements.... maybe find a choice sample too...

by the time i've done that, usually this "embryo" of a track is providing its own inspiration... you know... you got the bassline looping and you suddenly think, "i know, it'd be cool if a sweeping pad came in here", so you make the pad... and then you think "wow, it'd sound cool if a squelchy synth came in after that sweep"...

so i find i can usually make the very basics of a track and after that just "follow my nose", let the track lead me in the right direction, and it will flow from there.... once you get started inspiration comes and the track writes itself

or sometimes i start with just a single idea or concept... like once i made a track where i didnt let myself play any synths or keyboards at all... or i might set out to make a track which is 90% percussion... or most recently i heard a great protoculture tune with a nice drum roll in it, so i decided to make a tune with a drum roll...           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

i'm with soliptic here. its usually a small idea that gets me going in the track, i dont dream how to arrange them or think about the future of it when i start it.           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

Yeah, I agree with u guys, its possible to make psy in any state,

but when I'm feeling good and inspired, the song just flows from the begining to the end, and I fell I can transmit myself in the music much more easier.

I try to make music every day, no matter how I feel, but some days I feel I almost don't have to think to do it, the ideas just come to me, other days when I'm not so inspired I have to think much more and spend much more time, and in the end, normally I don't get so in touch with it.

And it gives so much more pleasure when things are floating

Anyway, I always try to overcome the less positive days, triyng to find something to make me fell better and in consequence get more inspiration. like a walk in the park or going out with some good friends, or something like that. Basically, doing something I enjoy.

Every time I got travel I notice a huge diference in my sound when I come back, its just amazing

I have loads of friends doing music and the tracks they do also always show how they where feeling at the time they did the track, if they're not feeling very good, the music comes quite dark and heavy, but after a sunny day at the beach its much easier to come up with a killa melodic track

Anyway, I think i depends on the individual...each one of us is afected by a unique set of diferent things...

I usually just mess around with some sound I think is cool - try to find a pumpin context for it, and exploring it's properties and possibilities - 20 hours later, it's a track

It's always good to have an idea of the atmosphere you are trying to achive though, but I seldom have this idea at first. When I do, it becomes impossible to create it - it just pops in after a while, and that helps finishing the track...

"while im eating (chewing a beat) "

HAHAHA....i thought i was the only one who does that!!
a really good way for me to get inspiration is play a bassline and bassdrum in a pattern and try singing to it or just improvising....OUT LOUD, then try to imitate the sounds you think you just made on your synth or vst...it is very fun sometimes and the results are sometimes surprising...try it.

where do you all get your ideas from? where
do you find your inspiration? i often feel very
empty... sometimes i really have lots of ideas
but somehow i have a really hard time holding
on these ideas and making them real. then
i end up sitting behind my stuff and being a
bit frustrated will this ever get better?
i mean does this get easier with the time?
lets say after making music for 4 years will
the ideas flow a bit smoother??

how is this for you?

I've found that inspiration comes and goes - it's very hard to predict control this.

However, when it hits, the biggest obstacle is not being familiar enough with my equipment/instruments to record my ideas as they hit me. As I've gotten more familiar with my gear the ideas definitely flow easier.

So inbetween bouts of inspiration I study, I practice, I try to prepare for those moments of "Oh!" followed by seclusion in the studio.
