Where has the night gone? The ritual of dancing all through the night is a memory that runs deep inside us. A memory that takes us back to a time when we respected Mother Earth and all living beings.

A time when we made rituals around the fire and danced with the intention of channelling the cosmic energies, to get closer to our Gods or simply to celebrate a good harvest or hunt. During these times the Shamans were our guides through to other realities. They induced people into trance with the help of magic potions made from herbs & the music of drums, flutes, didgeridoos or voice depending on the culture of each tribe.

With the rising of a new order in the Middle Age, these pagan rituals where repressed by “the church” in many countries. After many centuries these types of rituals have re-appeared in Western society in different forms, one of them being the Techno Tribal parties in Goa, India. These parties later became Goa Trance & Trance Parties we know today.

The Trance party is like a Shamanic journey where the DJ plays the role of the Shaman, inducing the crowd to the ecstatic state of psychedelic trance and guiding us through atmospheres and 'realities' created by the music. The DJ is guide that takes us through the night and the darkness to the infinite, reaching the most obscure areas of a human subconscious by selecting sounds that take you beyond...

Through music, dance and night come moments that expose our darker side, this is part of the whole process. After the darkness comes contemplation and the rising of a new day. This is the moment to really celebrate. Therefore without the whole process of night and day, the party experience becomes incomplete and almost meaningless.

The night for me begins slowly at the chaishops, meeting friends and getting ready for a new journey though the music. This is when the DJ begins to create the long story of the party. Starting slowly and spiralling into the night they prepare for the sunrise explosion.

At night what you see are the fluorescent clothes that people wear and fabulous the decoration made especially to be seen under the UV lights. As day comes our attention moves toward people and faces. We discover who has being dancing and partying with us during the night. This is when smiles are exchanged and spread through the dance floor; ideally when the sun comes up everyone is infected by the same energy.

To fully understand the sunrise process we must first pass through the night journey. We must appreciate both sides of the party (night and day), experiencing the whole party from beginning to end. Like watching a movie, you have to see the beginning to fully understand the end.

The Taoist philosopher Lao Tse that lived in China 2500 years ago describes the process of living the duality in order to understand the “whole” in one of his books; Tao Te Ching.

When people see things as beautiful,
ugliness is created.
When people see things as good,
evil is created.

Being and non-being produce each other.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low oppose each other.
Fore and aft follow each other.

Therefore the Master
can act without doing anything
and teach without saying a word.
Things come her way and she does not stop them;
things leave and she lets them go.
She has without possessing,
and acts without any expectations.
When her work is done, she takes no credit.
That is why it will last forever.
Lao Tse

To truly live the great experience of a Trance party it's extremely necessary to understand both aspects, night and day. This brings comprehension of the whole happening and you go home fully satisfied and renewed, ready for the next journey!!!

To resume it’s at night when you can dance like crazy, make funny faces, go crazy or simply close your eyes and trip on your visions. It’s a time to free your demons through dance, to leave reality, to enjoy the decoration and to dance as if nobody is watching.

Those that have accompanied the Brazilian trance scene since the beginning know what I'm talking about; remember the Trancoso dance floor going crazy at 2 in the morning, the fire, the full moon, the chillums and the fun. Like the good parties in Goa on the beach...waiting for the sunrise!!!

The old parties in Sao Paulo used have this tribal atmosphere; they were for fun and nothing else. These days the trance parties have become just other parties, another reason to go out and get off your face. These days there are (dis)organisers that make trance parties without decoration, under an ugly and packed tents. I can’t help asking, “Why don’t you make your party in a club like the others instead of making ridiculous attempts to trick the public in to thinking this is what Trance is all about.”

I'd like to invite everyone, especially the new organisers, to reflect on “Trance”, not only in Brazil but worldwide because if we aren’t careful the trance party will become one more meaningless pop paradise...

Great article...

Actually i don't think i need to emphacize anything but that's the pure true (talking in brazil's case). People nowadays start getting on parties by the period of the morning and some times at afternoon... and u really miss the whole thing (fluor deco etc...).

A Pity...           we are one.

shrOM, my friend, thanks for sharing this...
I don't know why, I don't like the early night moments in one day parties... I like to arrive around 3:00am - 4:00am so I can feel ne night vibes, when I know that sunrise will come...
Respect!
