I'd reccommend getting your hands on basic sequencers like FL Studio or maybe Reason, and learning as much as you can about that software..
Start to emulate tracks that you like and that you've listened to so that you learn production tricks, get to know about sound controls and filters, and so forth..
Otherwise hang out in the isra equipment section all day and you'll pick up a ton..
The MOTHER OF ALL threads are always a good device..helped me a lot in earlier days..

Good luck!

I also got a load of old threads somewhere. if i get my hands on them will post them her for sure.

Oh, just remembered, look for sub conscious mind's website. He has useful info there.

Also, check Psy-Forum.com. Great threads there as well!!

Fuzzikitten (where is this guy anyway?!?! ) posted some nice stuff. Look for his threads.

i would advice to start with cubase, its a complicated sequencer for a beginner

get cubase sx 3

new soundcard. good soundcard.

also get a midi controller keyboard so that you can play with vst instruments not using your mouse.

and if you really serious about music production then i would advice you to go to sound engineering school, you dont have to..you can learn eveything you need without the school but the prosses will be longer.

take it slow and learn as much as you can.

if you really serious about this then you have a few loooooong years ahead of you...

"Where does the beginner begin" ? .

In the beginning .. No ?

Update:

so i'm slowly grasping concepts of things and doing tutorials. I still haven't even tried to mix or eq anything because i feel i dont have adaquate speakers or soundcard to do so, but i'm just working on general concepts of things.

I've hit a stump, and i want you all to help me pull it out (the figurative stump that is).. Please.

I've got a 2 bar loop going with drums laid down and a bassline (thanks to Mike A's tut), but i dont know what to do for a melody or lead or anything. That's the figurative stump i'm talking about.

Are they just one note with effects? I listen to music like Shpongle, Hallucinogen, OOOD, Astral Projection everyday and i just feel like i'm not grasping something. I turn to you guys for your help and tutorial guidance on something to set me in the path to finding my answers.

Just another quick question, does playing the keyboard really help? as silly as it's going to sound I want to maximize my musical output. would lessons be something i should consider?

I'd fully recommend lessons in whatever musical instrument turns you on. However the keyboard is the main method used to record performances into a sequencer so it can help to have a bit of keyboard skills too, if that isn't your first choice.

Using 'one note with effects' is one way of making a lead, but for a melody you'll have to get musical!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
