I don't draw the line between dark and psychedelic, I just let them happily co exist in the same universe.
although when I say dark, I don't mean "darkpsy". darkpsy does not exist in my psychedelic universe.

Isn't darkpsy just fullon bass lines, +150 bpm with with a lot of noise added?

For me there is no line in this case. Either I find the music psychelic or I don't.
Dark is Full on baseline with noises? WTF are you talking about? I guess we don't listen to the same music. Or was it supposed to be a joke....
Whatever
Btw I see this becoming a "OMG Darkpsy ate my hamster" thread in the near future ...

Yes, this is a part of what I was talking about. It’s quite funny actually to read the “don’t call psy dark” thread back to back with the “don’t make dark fast or it won’t be dark” one. No wonder he makes such diverse music – a cat of many spots...

darker feelings where always part of music and if i'm not wrong fometrius asks where we define that thin line that when you cross things get darker than 'usual'.
|

Yep. I was just trying to figure out if “dark feelings” have to involve visions of schizophrenic vampires or it can be just sadness or nostalgia. If you define “dark” as anything that is not peppy and bouncy – it’s one question. If you are talking about depression or homicidal obsessions – it’s another. I am with Gutter on this one – we need to go beyond “dark” and “light” and elaborate a bit.
Hallelujah! God finally heard my prayers – it’s 1984 all over again!
(I can see Neelix working on a remix already)

You are right. To paraphrase Milton Friedman: we are all progressive now.
To go back to the question at hand: I don’t draw a line. “Dark” and “psychedelic” lie in two different dimensions and I consider them separately.

I don't get what problem people have with the word "dark". It describes a lot of night trance very well.
If music has a very deep bassline, has lots of minor intervals and dissonant intervals, and uses lots of intense atonal sounds, how is that not "dark"?
I guess the problem that people have with the word "dark" is that many people use it to mean "not full on or progressive" |

Psychedelic is a personal choice as far as I'm aware, just like psychedelic substances effect people differently so does psychedelic music.
I find plenty of my dark collection to be just good fun fast dance music with lots of crazy noises, like over the top industrial electronica (Cosmo, Zero Blade and many others)
Some of what people call dark is def. psychedelic like eniChkin, Zolod projects, Psykovsky, Glosalia, Freaks United, The Nommos, *some* Ocelot and many others)
And a lot of what people called psychedelic trance in the old days of scene to me was very much a precursor of what dark is today, esp. around the time of Distance to Goa 8 & the early techtrance movement. Not to mention the obvious like Xenomorph & Tim Schuldt/Four Carry Nuts.
Psychedelic is personal taste & experience. I liked mushrooms and could not stand Alice D. I like Psykovsky over say Tamlin.
I think this scene will go a lot further when people get the f*ck over the whole "what is psychedelic about dark psy trance" issue and just enjoy the ride that makes this scene!
I often go through my collection and hear how so many things like prog could mix in with dark psy elements can mix in with chillout elements can mix in with goa/psy elements but people just refuse to expand beyond their own little world of sound because that is what they are known for and it is the thing I think that is missing most in this music from the old days.
The fact that people just enjoyed what was coming out because it was exciting & the scene just got along with each other to survive.
IT's just way to divided now & it's not anyone but everyones fault & problem.
It's almost like this scene needs to implode & begin again from scratch.
Rant end.
I'm off to listen to some progressive electro semi-psy darlight tranouse music
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy! |

But listen to the latest 2/3-finished track from Fat Data. It's "progressive darkpsy" and it sounds great. Except authors themselves claim it's not dark. Maybe it's just cool nowadays to be "progressive" (in every sense). That's OK too, by the way. I have plenty of democrat friends and we manage to get along. Likewise, I can enjoy (some) progressive music. Stranger things have happened... Tolerance and respect are key, IMHO. |

This is why I'm liking artists like Fragletrollet, Para Halu, Enichkin and Olien.
They do it all and then some
I like the whole darkpsy terminology because it's a good safe guard to keep the pussy's away from the parties
just kidding....
