for me dark is not always psychedelic tbh regarding the avarage of the dark releases it is more hardcore and often in a boring way than psycedelic but of course not all.
I could name a pretty list of names I like.

Psycedelic has all elements that are possible,it is something almost cosmic,it is touching your most inner depth,it contains also often dark elements indeed that one that I personaly like quite often and contains stuff that makes you really fly close eyes and really freak out.It is the highest level of audible magic.

Has little, if anything, to do with the music.
Depends totally on my mood and state of mind.

"Dark" or "night time" are just labels to me.

I can listen to the "Russian" brand of psy trance and learn how it sounds. I know that its official name is “darkpsy”. So, when somebody invites me to listen to a “dark” track, I have some idea what to expect. It does not mean that this music evokes any dark feelings. Often quite the opposite. Like in this case, for example:

The same goes for “night” full on. I’ve never been to a trance party, so I have no idea what these morning/night/twilight labels mean. I imagine that’s how DJs group their tracks by time of the day. But you can get an idea of how “night full on” sounds in comparison to “morning full on” and kinda know what to expect – even if it does not feel “dark” to you.

That said, I really don’t care for screams of murder victims or down-pitched laughter or any other cheap tricks people may use to make their music “dark”.

“Psychedelic”, IMHO, is a wider term but it’s more personal. A walk in a park on a spring evening or a drive through Pennsylvania’s mountains in October can be psychedelic – as in “moving one’s soul”. It does not have to be taking drugs or listening to abstract repetitive music. On the other hand, more people will agree on what is dark than on what is psychedelic.

And what is “dark”, anyway? Scary? Disturbing? Or just melancholy?
Is this dark?

to me psychedelic is the music that has different 'stories' to look to (..hear actualy) at the same time. as dark i would define the more angry, abstract, sad or depressive feelings in music that make the listener turn into an inner self trip, more than sharing the experience through dancing or communicating in general.

What i would define as dark would be tracks without any other vibes than those we experience as dark. For me ,what really feels psychedelic one might say is when all "parts" are there. When it feels whole.

JohnTaramas and Fometrius, your definitions seem very similar. So, when you listen to "Great Illusion", wouldn't you say it's more of a "whole" than just a "dark part"? There is nothing depressing about it. One would refer to it as "dark" just because the style is a sub-set of darkpsy, that's all. I just change the genre label in my Media Player library to "Forest Trance" - problem solved.

And the song by Komitas definitely is not meant for dancing - yet it's moving and makes you recall things you probably never knew.

A lot of this "dark" labeling is just for Ocelot and Hero #1 to have something to fight about and for the progressive bunch to crack occasional jokes.

I describe forest trance to people as "Baba Yaga music". Every time I listen to it I imagine her on the porch of her hut behind DJ gear, giving a party to her mischievous friends. All those witches, gnomes and swamp hags are just having good time. If you think about Russian folklore, you’ll realize that the only truly evil character there is Kaschey The Immortal. I am pretty sure he is not invited to the party. Others are more or less OK

I think the main difference , keeping in mind that dark doesnt stop being psychdelic, is the lack of melodic layers.

personaly i didn't see any problem in fometrius question, unfortunately we cannot replace the word dark with the word forest all the time. there is a misunderstanding as i see here, there is 'stop calling psydark' thread for what you talk about.
darker feelings where always part of music and if i'm not wrong fometrius asks where we define that thin line that when you cross things get darker than 'usual'.

what does it matter really?
maybe its some chords progression, notes blended to feelings
maybe its static and repetitive

is it good?
is it great?
then why care when or where
