By cheap I mean good quality for a cheap price !!!!!

I'm looking to get a PC desktop with dual quad core processor as I am tired of the lousy performance of my old computer where I'm running things on a 2.8ghz P4 processor now...
Since I would use this machine only as a daw and as nothing else whatsoever I am looking to get a really basic setup without much bull... or fancy stuff. Just the basics for a daw!

Thanks for your help!

Computer stores usually sell these.

http://www.tigerdirect.com
http://www.newegg.com (better than the former if you're on the east cost..you'll have it in 2 days ground shipping)

If it meets your requirements, I highly recommend this:

Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

You know Psyaudiodynamics. I am tending to lean towards the Dell direction right now. Not sure yet though and they are NOT the cheapest.

I have also been eyeing slickdeals for quite a while as well.

Is there no place out there where you can buy a computer with only the basics, meaning no stupid wifi, no soundcard (who needs their crap anyway?),

I basically want nothing but a motherboard with processor, 1 fast harddrive, ram and external video card and dvd burner. none of all the "slick features" they keep promising.

Oh and it should have an onboard firewire connector that works for my m-box and maybe 6 usb's but really nothing else.

Once I have such a machine I will wipe everything anyway and try to obtain a tiny xp copy. Basically I want nothing and I mean NOTHING but stuff I really need for a daw.

Many thanks for all your inputs so far and please keep them coming.

so the best way is to configure you own setup, it doesnt worth to pay a single brand thats sometimes overpriced.
take an asus board(good model with TI chipset)
your dual/quad core processors, 4Gb ram, a cheap video card (60$), btw what do you need external video for??,, and two hard drives (80-100 for programs and a big one for storage)
only thing imho you should invest a little money is the case,, check the new coolermaster case, it rocks (a little more expensive-bout100$ but worth them) or any silent type case.
anyway no way to buy a dell thing, their consumer products are not that good after all, HP & Dell are good brands in their business products, consumer products does not have a good reputation/not worth the money
in US all these things must be way cheaper than anywhere in the rest of the world, so make your own setup, dont buy ready things
you should be able to make a decent/very good daw for 700-800$ if you consider that most of the products are cost 100$ in US -- the same product costs 100 euro in europe .. so, you got what i mean

coolermaster haf-932

(only thing you might not want is that this is a full tower- and you might not need it- check also for mid-towers / silent type-fewer dB from the fans)

I agree with gutter, build you own, that's the best way (by far) to go if you want to get the most out of your money.

Yeah a barebone pack and all the basic parts will be a lot cheaper and more effective than a pre built or build to order PC if you know what you're doing, you just have to look into it a bit more as far as compatibility and stuff..           You believe in the users?

hey Upavas, most of all these pc's come with a souncard already implemented to the motherboard,
so stuff like that u can't ask for it not be there since they are build in assemblies in that fashion but have control a bit more with what video card u have in there and what not... the best thing would be to build one
yourself but if ur buying already made... id go dell.

of course like we've stated building ur own would be the best decision, whether u know how to, i wouldn't know but if u don't dell is ya pick
only problem i've had is a hard drive failure which just happens as we all know and my laptop dvd player stopped working other than that they all still tick tockin hard... hell my laptop has been to hell and back and still rocken, but maybe i been lucky best regards

To free up more bus...

I will keep looking for a while, but really think a shopping trip to the USA is needed. It will be sometime but I'll let you know how it goes.

In another post someone wrote that win xp can't see more than 2 gigs of ram, if I get a dual quad processor with 2 gigs ram, and install xp on it, would that be a big difference to my P4 2.8ghz + 2 gigs of slower ram that I am using now? I just want to make sure it doesn't all get bottlenecked because of that?

huge
processing power is all we need, not ram memory, all the plugins and vst's consume CPU power ,, P4 vs Quad core has a huge difference , even a duocore is much slower,,
about memory , xp reads 3,2 gb easily , dont put different brands of memories, buy one pair or two pairs of the same brand (ex. corsair) and THE SAME exact model.
i find no reason at all to put an external video card at all, if you want more buses, buy the motherboard you like and consider it to have the amount of the buses you want
the video card will take one pci/pci-e so youre going to have 4-5 more slots, more than enough (ex. 1 for internal audio card, 2-3 for dsp cards etc), i think youre gonna make it worse than better with it

when you order a pc you never know what you going to get. it can be loud and really get in the way of your production. The hard drive might be shitty and vibrate,
fans too loud, cheap cooling system etc... u get the point.

another drawback is that its going to come with win vista which sucks big time.

individual parts come with 3 year warranty and if you buy a brand name you will just get one year.

Building you own is the way.
I build my computer with the help of people from this forum and I couldn't be happier. It's rally easy building it even a kid could do it and there is 100's of videos on how to do it. This way you will get to know your computer and if you have problems in the future you will know how to fix it.

There is a few people here that work with computers and they will tell you the best parts within your budget. just ask

I have built the computer I am typing on here right now, and after yet more research I agree, it probably is the best way to built it together myself. Still thinking about buying the parts in the US tho...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:
