Hi !
Wonder in which situation you should use headphones / speakers.
IŽve noticed you hear new things when you shift from speakers to headphones.
I can give you an example iŽve been working on a song for a quite long time now with my speakers right now i listen to it with speakers and i hear new things i have to fix.
There is some tuning, timing issues that
i couldnŽt hear when i listened to my song with my speakers.
So any advice when you should use headphones
during the musicproduction are very welcome. |

I use headphones just to hear reference to our mix. also in headphones you can hear diference in the stero-image and mono\stereo leads or parts.

I use aways (HD 590). Lack of money to buy good monitors.
Anyway, I see no problem using good headphones. I think it is just a matter of get used to it.

i prefer to use monitors, cause i think that headphones gives u the feeling that ur track is somehow fatter then it actually is =D
but like sound surgeon, i gotta use them at night =/
and i also use them to check out stereo effects |

I use the headphones at night predominantly... neighbours like them too!! if u have decent production headphones for positioning and levelling i find the headphones a great option, but as far as eq and compression, only through the monitors...
what works for me is using both the monitors and headphones in conjunction to get two reference points during mixdown..

When I'm creating music, I use my monitors, Sub, bass, treble speakers. But when I'm done creating something I like, I usually put the track on my mp3-man and go for a walk. To feel the sound more in stereo and without any disturbances created by the room (echo and such)... |

i use them all the time, up till the mixdown stage, because mixing bass on them is impossible... But for stereo-width and panning they are much more usefull then monitors, to program synths it's great because you hear the sound more detailed, etc... |

Headphones are good for controlling the pan and width of your instruments/tracks. Also, I have found cheaper headphones (less bassy ones) suiteble for checking reverb effects (you hear them clearer in headphones IMHO).
I also think that it is easier to focus on a single detail in the headphones.

I have found that headphones I good for checking kick/bass compaitability. Sometimes I have it sounding sooo good, then I check it on the phones and the kick doesnt sound as meaty, so I change things around until it does. Dont forget, if u make music just to sound good in a club you aint paying enough attention to detail for home listeners.
Like AjmaGard I also use it for reverbs. Found out about that quite by accident and still dont know why U can hear it like that.
There are many things that can be heard in the isolation of a set of headphones that cant be heard in an open atmosphere that has more bass interference. |

I have three pairs of headphones here but I never ever use them in the studio. I get enough detail and information from my speakers. Also, when working with headphones in the past, I always missed the low-end from the speakers so I would tend to turn the headphones up louder. Too loud. Not a good thing!

Yes. Headphones are the number one cause of tinnitus, not loud parties/concerts. If you think about how much time people can spend with their headphones on, and how loud some people listen to them, the truth of this is readily apparent.
