Do you generally compose all your tracks first, before mixing (panning, level, EQ) once the arragement is done? My workflow is that each time I add a new sound to the mix, I'll EQ it and try get a good mix with what's present. This is normally preliminary, because once the mix gets more saturated I'll go back and adjust any EQing or levels that needs it. Normally after that, I'll add compression to the tracks that need it, once again adjust their EQ if needed and then go onto the mastering stage.
The only problem with this workflow, is that I sometimes find myself spending too much time getting a perfect mix between kick and bass, and then when I start adding pads and leads I find I need to readjust the balance anyway. (I generally use different EQ on my kick and bass depending on the track, so I don't have a premixed Kick/Bass combo I'll use on every track, I normally start from scratch.( |

im doing everything at once. mixing is done during the track is composed and after that.
minor (or major?) mixing fixes are done after the track was played on the dancefloor

well since i got new monitors i spend about 50% time then before on eq.
once u have great monitors and good acoustic room thats it not much Q to ask.
realy ddo believe without this u simply try looking throu dirty glasses.
all books says finish your track then adjust eq's , but i rather make it all from begining then after finish going throu evry channel again to make perfect.. usualy after quick master i might go back to the track and adjust stuff to fit better with the crossovers i want.

I'd definately say keep a steady mix going as you work. For one it will mean less hassle later. Also you will have a better idea of what you can fit in your mix rather than having to go back and redo things later. Obviously if you've been producing for a good few years you probably have a sixth sense for what's going to work and what isn't, but for a beginner like myself I like to keep things as clean as possible as I go along. |

I do it in two major stages:
1. Constantly during production process. Thus ALWAYS using eq's, panning, minding levels etc for every sound in order to fit it in the mix. (I can hardly imagine not doing this, mixing is a major part of the creative process imo)
2. When the track is finished I bounce different parts of it (snares, kick+bass, leads, percussion, efx,...) in several wavfiles. Then I stack those full songlength files in a sequencer and do soime final mixing. Now you can easily remove some frequencies out of some parts thoroughly.

I usually will do the mixing while I'm composing as well, whenever I add a part I try to make it fit in the context of when it's used and what it's used with. I'll also go back though multiple times during and at the end of the track to make sure everything's ok mixwise. Then from there after I've played it out, I usually have a friend of mine who writes music tell me whether or not I've got too much hi end on my sounds or if it sounds dirty or whatnot. I tend to send my tracks to a close dj/artist friend to get feedback on it before he'll master it for me or to test the mastering job I did on it. Also, I feel it's very important to mention doing the final mixing process if possible first thing in the morning with fresh ears. There's been many times where I'll finish something late at night, and completely miss something because my ears were tired.

One thing also, my kick peaks at -6db and my bass around 1/1.5db below that. Should those be the loudest elements in the mix? |

Crude panning and eq during the writing stage and fine-tuning after it's finished, preferably after a week or so. I do use a standard setup template track though: with most instruments, routings, folder tracks, group tracks with inserts, sends and so on already in place. I don't like to spend a lot of time on technical details when i'm trying to be creative.

in my experience you get better sound quality in the end by mixing at the same time but you listen so much to the track that it s often less intelligent that if you where writing it fast.for me the best is to tweak the sound ,bounce it and never come back tweaking it to not hear the track too much ,if it s not perfect it s ok, perfect mixed tracks don t exist |

well if you want your kick and bass to be the loudest part of your track, then yes.
