i think we producers ,always complicated things too much when everything is simple,a shit sound ll always sound like shit but we loose our time trying to eq and using lot of fx... you can t get good production like that except if you have very good hear and good acoustic in the studio.now i tweak the source like crazy and even with no eq at all i can tell you it s sound better than lot of psytrance realesed, so don t loose your time with eq and fx, they are just there to make what sound good sound even better.maybe not everyone ll agree , but the less processing the better it ll sound in the end with me tweaking the plugs (too much tweaking and it don t sound natural at all,it s with time you get better and better for that)

I agree with mk47 and PoM.

With most creative endavours it's kind of in their nature that you never are really 100% happy with the results. I think if you would actually reach that point it would be a disaster for your creativity.

The main skill IMO is to find interesting sounds that work well together as they are.
Try to think of yourself foremost as a musician and be serious about getting the most out of your synths/samplers first of all.
When it then comes to mixing you might need to compress and EQ to get things the way you want, but I think most beginners would actually have better results if they completely avoided using any compression or EQ's and just focused on getting the right source sounds.

At least when you do open up your comp/EQ you should know what issue you want to rectify or if you are using them creatively what effect you like to create. Sounds obvious, but i noticed many producers applying processing simply "because you should EQ your bass/kick to get good sound".

I personally grew up with synths, samplers and mixers since a very young age so my memories of my early production is quite vague but it for sure took a few years before I got a complete track together I was reasonably satisfied with.
But back then it was not only the issue of learning the equipment. Having a bunch of synthesizers with different sequencers which couldn't all be synced as well as limited voices and FX would have made a 400Mhz PC with Fruity Loops seem like the ultimate dream setup in terms of work flow and power.
I've been producing for more than 20 years now, and I'm still learning new tricks and techniques and getting better results I think.

One last tip that might sound silly but I found helpful when working with stuff that I'm not so experienced in is "fake it til you make it".
When you sit down in the studio be an actor playing the role of a highly skilled producer and I think you will get better results than if you have a mindset where you doubt your capabilities.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)
