There is a lot of ways of getting inspired to make a melody, but what I think is more crucial is the interface you use to get from your brain to your speakers.. cause you might have the wickedest lead in your head or just even a feeling and you have to tell the pc how to play that lead when it's just mental notes..
I usually make most of my melodies with my guitar because it's what I find the easiest way to make the melody. I have the FREEDOM to play, and the mind connects to and speaks threw the instrument. Then I make the computer play that sound/notes/rhythm..
Most of my effects and twists comes from playing around after with the knobs of my controller, but that (the controller) is just another "instrument"..
I also believe that everybody has music in their head: anyone can tap their foot on each beat of a music, clap their hands at each 2nd beat with the clap perfectly, or realize when a dude with a guitar plays the wrong note in a solo... Everyone has a perfect sense of music in their brain and somewhere to get inspired from, they just need to how to make the sounds.
So we can get inspired by just about anything or even nothing, but it's the instrument you use that makes you able to show to others the music that's rocking in your head. It's like paper and pen for poets, food ingredients for cooks, paint for painters..
So I try to think and feel THREW the instruments I play with.
Hope I helped with my 0,5 cents

Well I try to imagine myself in the forest at night right in the front of big PA while my track is playing there loud. I try to recollect how trees reflect the sounds and how deep the overall audio picture becomes.

i imagine something that would intrigue me to hear in a song then i start with that element. i keep it simple and continue to elaborate until satisfied. i've written very few songs that have a 'story' per-say however they did come out fairly well.
i've never been to any psy parties or anything. nor do i have many fond memories to draw from so i have to create my own experiences through music, or just remember my last lsd trip. http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)
