Mild distortion does the trick for hard kicks but not phat... fatness comes from low frequencies so a long kick is usually fat. I find myself cutting low fqncies from kicks most of the time, don't like them too phat anyway.

it s easy to get a phat one with the right analog processing , but i know it s possible to nail almost the same phatness with plugins but it s way more tricky.
distortion, saturation ,multiband can sound good yes but i haven t got great result, i always end up bypassing ,maybe i dont use the right plugs...equing is one of the key for sure.

get a good sample haha seems like a shitty answer, but it really can be true.

I've tried altering my kicks here and there, always just with EQ to add lows or cut certain freqs. I actually have never tried saturation so that could be interesting. Compression always sounds shitty to me because you can either get a big snap, or a little change in the transient to make it louder. You'd have to be careful with distortion so it just doesn't sound turn into a shit sound.

I've heard some songs that have a bitcrushed sounding kick that have sounded really solid, so I guess that could be cool to try. Maybe a bitcrush send or distortion send, so it doesn't ruin all the lows.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

one trick i use is to eq the kick, then i set a compressor with very fast attack ,from 0 to 5/10 ms with a ratio around 10 ,then i compress around 10 db and use dry/wet to mix it with the dry signal from 5 to 30%. then i use a other comp where i compress like 15/20 db with slower attack and release and use the dry/wet to mix it around 10 to 30 % . then i set a pultec style eq (like the soneq, this plug sound very close to some hardware eq) between the 2 comps.

And now that you mentioned it, i also use the UAD Pultec on kick sometimes.

try to tune your kick to your bassline and they will compliment each other adding to the fatness.
proper eq settings.
and a good source to begin with.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

getting the source the best before thinking to any processing is a other key point for sure.

It's not a shitty answer, it's straight to the point. I have a staggering collection of 4 kickdrums I use.

keeping all frequencies no lowcut and pump it up make it glew with bass.Actually all kicks can be made as fat as you want it with nice eq/monitors in my personal opinion.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

Its all a matter of the amount of time the kick takes to sweep down, so no absolute answers, but don't be afraid to boost circa the 100hz region with a shelf or notch.

IMO, this is one of the hardest things in production - its looks simple, but it really isn't.

Getting a good kick and bass combo is really hard. The patches are easy, but getting them really good is very, very hard.

Phatness in the kick is in the 100hz to 250hz region IMO. Play with EQ there. Don't epect to 'get it' quickly.           .
