Lately i´ve been building a wall with a subby kick and bass. With eq i´ve made them both bassy so that they together form a wall of a bassy unit. This has made it quite easy
to mix leads, pads to it. Anyone else who has
a similar experience? |

People perceive some things based on what they hear, I was reading somewhere about whole this psychological thing behind it, like trying immediately to locate things, so in case of sub stuff, you must be careful and actually give them illusion that is heard also, or else they can't find the bass in the track or even they can't feel all that sub energy in some cases, so that all will be missing, so the key here is making illusion of that low sound in higher register.
Also you will be having your low end taking most energy and headroom, that immediately translates in quieter mixes, also speakers will have harder time reproducing all that sub energy.
Also you need to have proper monitoring to nail this stuff, so yeah, sub would be ideal in good treated room.
But try it, trial&error all the way |

when you are mixing you need between 9db to -6db of headroom in the master, this is fundamental for the fx that you will shot in the channels for example a channel where is the chord without mix fx, sound to -11db when you add a reverb and delay it will easily go to -9db.
I keep my Kick-11+limiter and bass to -11.5db, group-6db+glue.
try to listen some Dub music from the 70ts you can learn a lot of their mixes ,how they make explote the snares, fills, chords, sirens adding just reverb and delay
