im having similar issues.
i cant run more than like 4-6 VSTi's and like 10 FX and ive got an Athlon 3500+ Venice with a good mobo. I dont know what to do. What is a good temperature to have on ur pc? Mine is usually from 39 C to 42C during heavy music tasks. Is that normal? I dont think its the 1 gig Ram he has. It can easily be checked though, go to Task manager and see how much Commit Charge is being used. My ram isn't even ever halfway maxed out. Its either my CPU or Mobo or something...

Jeto,

Just for the heck of it, install one of yer dad's SX3 copies. (Jeto's dad is the man by the by). I would also install Nuendo as a side-test. Load them up. You may have to compare big ol vsti's like z3ta and such. see what the cpu difference is.

Personally I think u could be best off by reinstalling Win with the Standard PC option; check your bios boot screen if you can see which IRQs are assigned: no doubling. You want to disable things like the parallel port and serial ports in the BIOS-it will free up some of the resources for other things like netbroke and the like.

ACPI can have a negative affect on your overall performance. Also get a second hard drive and install it on a completely open IDE channel. Not sure if you're running SATA or not, but the hard drives should be on independant channels. THe CD can be on one or the burner on one and the ROM on another. put on your new D drive your swap disk. This should help out a little with the number of tracks--and anyone out there telling you to turn off virtual memory probably hasn't done it themselves: you can't. if you turn on the VM size column in the taskman or process explorer you will see that most of all the apps running on your box are swapped to varying degrees.

I would use a different hard disk for the new install so you can try it out without messing up your current work.

Love ya bro, let me know if you have questions.

Those of us with dual procs (like me) ACPI is your only option as win will only use one of the procs in standard PC mode. Read the clicking faq on the m-audio website. Pretty much says the same thing.

This whole acpi talk is old. Motherboards got better and introduced apic mode, which sorts out alot of problems we had earlier with acpi systems.

Good tip with disabling parallel/serial ports to free up more irq's.

Just swap some pci cards you have irq sharing on. that will do the trick.

Follow some tweakguides to get more performance out of your computer.

Be sure to set windows to optimize for background applications, as asio is a background process. Reduce started processes via START - RUN - services.msc
!!! BE SURE WHAT YOU DO HERE, IT COULD SCREW UP YOUR WINDOWS. !!!

Sorry I can't remember a good tweakguide on the net. Google is your friend.
