use one of the variable bit rate settings (VBR). it will select the optimal bit rate depending on audio material chunks. for critical chunks a high bit rate will be chosen, for not-so-critical chunks a lower bit rate will be chosen. this will give you excellent results while saving space for chunks where a high bit rate is of no auditory benefit.

LAME, but:
1. don't use default profiles
2. don't forget to turn filters off
3. use VBR, as suggested by dtd
then you get the best sounding mp3
but still, if you can keep wavs 96k/24 - DO IT. |
