@ cyclone : you can, but they will be definitely more quiet than with an amp ... if you don`t plan to use them on high volume it should suffice

for instance beyers 990 600ohm won`t be usable

i don`t know about the duet, but some interfaces have something stronger headph.output

edit : also the sound quality improves on some more expensive models with proper amp

even my AKGs 240 which have 55ohm are still not so loud when i connect them directly to the optput - but at least it protects my ears .. i drive them through the soundcraft mixer when i need a bit more volume ..          http://soundcloud.com/user8501508/sets

these ! frequency is suposed to be almost flat (no peak so the sound is very clean and plesant) , they have been made for production i m thinking to get a pair , it s fukcing expensive but when you compare to monitors + room acoustic it would cost a lot to get a flat response .

it have been smoothed to 1/3 octave ,have to check on voxengo span how much smoothing can change curves

hey domi i was about to post about that vrm thingy
http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio_interfaces/vrm_box/

are you happy with it?a friend told me it s good.

somone recomended me the at-m50 for checking low end and transaltion to clubs ! he mix on headphone since years with great result ,he said they have the best bass of any headphone out ,i think he also use the vrm tool as he mentioned it too, will report later when i try the at-m50.

about mixing on headphone i really dont like it tired the ears very fast and it s hard to balance well the tracks and stereo ... but for equing it can be usefull , when it s sound good on monitors and on headphones it s all good (i have dt 880 and i find they are good reference, the track have to be right or it dont sound good on them but low end is a bit lacking, from 100 hz to 20 hz it fall by a few db i have to correct it with a shelf eq at 20 hz with +3 db)

im using Audio-technica ATH M-50 for 3 years know...

and i´m really happy with it, they are top quality headphones, you will not find any other headphone that sound better, because this ones are absolutly truth, but to find another headphone with same acuracy... you will have to pay almost twice...

so 3 years ago they were highly recomended from an expert, a person who works and research about studio material every day, and today i have to say im very pleased for this choice

they still sound today like they were bought yesterday, absolutly zero, unoticed loss of quality for using them for 3 years... i have also to say i use them mostly for studio (and they are mostly studio headphones)

they also feel nice and strong in your ears, , its not likely they will break for use in years

i definitly recomend them to anyone... even if you had money to buy the most expensive thing on the market, this ones will be completly reliable and even a little bit cheaper when compared to other great ones i know

i got the ath m50 ! first impression is the built in quality i m not impressed having a beyer.. anyway it s still good quality and it s the sound that matter.. so firt listen ,the sound is very artifical, a hole in the mids, sound kinda like some genelec i heard ...i check my playlist on some tune that i know have problems (boomy kicks, mud in the mids..) the ath is very forgiving lol and almost everything sound good i have to listen carefully to spot some problems.. so i got a bit disapointed and i wonder why this producer told me to get them (how it could be possible? he mix on them and is in clubs every weekends all other the globe) ... also my beyer sound more flat and way more critical !
i break them in a little come back listening to them and wtf dude , they sound like dynaudio bm6a now ! very similar sound .. cool ,i try to make a kick bass from scratch i synthesize a kick a bassline eq a bit test on monitors tweak a little... sound good on par with what i hear from full on labels like nano.
it s just a first impression but so far i think i m gonna like them a lot, it s not flat but i like the balance and it complement well my beyer and monitors..
vs my beyer that is more flat and critical i have been surprised by the ath cause it s more easy to get a good kick bass with that hyped sound the low is more forward, you really hear well where the snap of the bass should be with the filter position and envelop amount, also for equing i hear better ,0.5/1db on a band you hear (not as well as on the adam)but it surpised me cause it s not the case on beyer you have to cut or boost more to hear the eq.
it just first impression but i recomend to anywone with middle forward headphone or monitors to give them a try ,i think it can be a good additon

agree the guy who recomend them to me stick to the ath it give him good translation in clubs ,money is not a issu for him he could buy way more expensive ones.
i just used the ath a little but it feel closer to mixing on real monitors when comparing to beyer dt 880 (just made a kick bass and used just eq so take this with a grain of salt),i think when i learn them inside out i will be very happy with them ,it seems well suited for electronic music ,it s not super critical sound but with a few trial and errors it will be all good i think... i was used to the beyer with bass shy and now with the ath the balance is more like pa systems ,i m really more enjoying that sound but i guess the beyer will be better in the mids and maybe highs but not to get the overall balance .

As I don't know much about impedance, I'm asking here for help. Would one be able to drive a pair of AKG 702s (62 ohm impedance) using an M-Audio Firewire 410 or would I need a preamp?

I've managed to track down the following information on the FW 410:

Quote:
HEADPHONE OUTPUTS at Maximum Volume Into 32 ohm load
Frequency Response +/- 2 dB, 22 Hz to 22 kHz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio -101 dB, A-weighted
Max Output Level into 32 ohms -3.5 dBV ( +0.665 Vrms) into 32 ohms @ < 0.8% THD+N
Load Impedance 32 to 600 ohms

Here are the 702s: http://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_k702.htm

Thanks in advance.

I have a AKG 701,they have a perfect sound, but the design I do not like, are too heavy if you're making music for long periods...

use this site to pick headphones. you can build a frequency graph and compare headphones.
