No headphones are suitable for the whole 9 yards, the ones that probably come closest to the benchmark you suggested would be Sennheisers HD 700. Bloody expensive, but some of the very best out there... nevertheless I suggest proper monitors...

i don't think good headphones is a must , though you need good monitors.i use simple headphones to fix the little things like reverb/delay issues, unwanted noises etc.
you can't replace the monitor with headphones imo. |

Check out this website:
http://www.headphone.com/
After reading a lot of about headphones my self I decided to go with AKG K 701
http://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/full-size/akg-k-701-white.php
I was amazed at the way they sound and I still get amazed to this day. They say it over 100 hrs of break in time for them to sound their best after you buy them.. THat amazed me even more to know they were gonna sound even better. There is a lot of room and distance between the ear and the speaker so the sound feels like you are at an outdoor party or just listening to regular speakers. Sound moves and bounces inside its a great listening experience.
They are light and huge. They cover your entire half of head and are supper comfortable. They are great for studio and music listening in the house but I would be emberased to walk out of the house with them. THey are one of the best out there so if you need to go the headphone way get these. I got mine on ebay for $260 brand new.. Worth every penny..
Another pair I highly recommend is Sennheiser HD 25
These are a lot smaller and they sound great. Great for traveling. I got these for my girlfriend and she is supper happy. I mostly use them when we travel on planes and she uses my crappy Sony MDR V700.. Sound horrible compared to the other two.
All this being said even though I have great headphones I would never use them for producing. I use them occasionally at night when I have to keep the noise down, but thats only to get some ideas down, drum parts, etc.... not serious stuff like eq and getting the kick and bass to fit.
Hope this helps a little

i would definetly try them in a shop, which souldn't be a problem, cause the akgs sound very different from the beyerdynamics or sennheiser.
I've tested all and took the akg k271.
