Hi,

I've been trying to create music(mostly psytrance) seriously for about a year or so. I've been studying lots of stuff from the internet. A good sample is this forum.

I've managed to create tracks that pleases me ... for a while.

What would be an essential step for making more unique music?

What should i do so that i could maximize the fact that the music is representing my thoughts. Learn to play keyboard? Learn to use synthesizers better? Learn music theory? Whats the direction here?

Bare with me, im half a sleep...

Time... lot's of it... time to experiment and gain experience.

Imagination is also essential but that we all have up to some point.

I think one half is the composition in terms of what is happening, layers, melodies and how it all fits together and flows, i think nobody can teach you this, it can develope.

Another side is the production, how good does everything sound, takes time to learn how to get the kick and bassline to fit perfect, also must layer the mid and hi and EQ so that the fequencies have some room and dont create a disonance, and lots of other stuff, its endless.

The two together is the mark of good music, good composition AND good production quality.

How to achieve this, i think practice and learning from people who know more is the way...

I think we alle have a tendency to get to technical.

I think you should travel to another country. Ok not nessecary another country just get some new experiences if you're stuck. IMO try to experience the nature more if you dont already. The time when I was the most creative and productive was the time when I was in the army because I experinced new things every day. We were living in the forrest for 5 days at a time and then you got home in the weekend with your mind filled with new stuff to think about and use in your music. Atleast thats the way I feel about it.

music theory and learning to program synthesizers is very handy to achieve what u want, like that u will get to the result you are hearing in your head faster... But to be original, you have to have original ideas., and like AvS said, going to another country, immerging yourself in a different atmosphere and listening to different kinds of music will help you create the right mood to be original and creative. Doing things in a different way will help to, for example, if u usually start by making the bass, try starting with the lead, and that fact alone will make your sound different... hope this was of help...

Level 0: plan and build your (minimal)
studio;
Level 1: study psy-trance midi files if you can have access to them: the patterns commomly used for drums intro, breaks, arpeggios, basses etc.
For example, in http://midi.johnsteenbergen.com/
there are tons of euro-trance midi files made by a great community (http://www.tranceaddict.com/)
"Is there something like that on psy-trance?"
It's a good practice to start out your tracks here...
(in parallel): study how you could use compressors/gate/EQ/delay/reverb/chorus in order to make your first tracks more interesting.
Level 3: you already know how create a song now, and use the basic effects as well, so it's important to start out thinking in another directions (listen chill out, trip-hop, gothic scene, pop etc.). This help to come up with new things so that you can add them in your music.
Level 4: Advanced study: using effects in order to come up with new sounds (extensive filtering; waveshaping functions; bizarre vst plug-ins etc.), even study the techniques used by famous sound designer and movie-sound makers. Reaktor and Wavestation Legacy can your best freind here...

And never forget it:
Learning musical theory will expand the possibilities for expressing your feeling and emotions, and it's the most important step to make really interesting tracks for us and other people. If you make that, you will get happy with your music.

Musical theory & sound design will my freind for years...

i can still remember two advices i received when started making music and i can say i still use them:

a) finish as many tracks as you can. even if u don't know anything about EQ and/or compression, even if your tracks suck big time at first, you will eventually get it...

b) if your music touches your soul, it will touch other people's souls as well. so u don't really have to worry about what others will say... just make yourself happy and satisfied with the result and the rest will follow!           .
Respect is earned, not demanded...

Groove it man and groove it .
Drums,breaks,percussions-they are powerful to make as dancing .
For shure dont forget ,melodies ,harmonies and other stuff,
but drums(percussion also) ,is more powerfull instrumaent in your music than others, if you produce dancing music(trance, house or other genre)
and there is a lot to add to that picture but start(if you already have a some bedroom studio(you comp for example))from Groove the drums .
If you will understand the drums you will now where to put your melodies and harmonies(in track)
I cant add more than that cause its never ends.
Good luck.
