I want to record my own samples, like sounds made by me with something or just some talk...whats better? to buy a portable recorder and record into it and pass to the computer, or a microphone pluged to my computer?

I prefer the portable recorder cause i dont need to be at home in my lap i want to record something...but, speaking of quality what is the best? too much difference between both?           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``

hey becktrank! yes there is difference, and sometimes a very big, depending on the microphone and the things you run it through.

I have the Zoom H2, i bought it when it was cheaper than now.. im quite happy with it, it makes decent recordings if you use it correct. Though
if you want to find someone with low noisefloor on high gain you might have to try some different, i can imagine that you can find lots of different portable recorders in various price ranges...

It depends on where do you want to record. If you are a lot in the move and you want to record some nature sounds etc. best thing to do is protable. But if you want to record only at your studio or home buying a good mic IMO is bether thing to do because of saveing money. You can get a good mic for about 100$ whille portable is far away more $$$           Never let computers to win a game! :)

I'll second the Zoom H2. I just did some recording with mine this weekend and included it in a track that I'm working on and the samples are top notch for sure

The portability is key, I just take mine with me everywhere (recorded a great coffee brewing sound at a friends house this weekend + some great conversations earlier in the week)           ~Airyck~

+1

That H2 is really nice quality. Psychedelic coffee brewing ftw!           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

if u can...spend a little bit more and get the sony d50....way way better build quality(body made of aluminuim makes zoom feel like a toy and looks gr8!) and way more easier to use than the zooms...also the mic angles can be moved from the standard 90 degree xy positions that most recorders use to a 120 degree wide position which is by far my favourite way to use this...ambiences and stuff sound eerily realistic when recorded this way...

check it

The zoom H2 has a 90 degree 2 mic setup on the front and a 120 degree 2 mic setup on the back. Both can be used seperately or in conjuction in either mono, 2 channel surround, or 4 channel surround recording.

Yes it's made of plastic but I don't plan on chucking it at the wall.           ~Airyck~

Awesome, I'm sure you're gonna get some great samples from it. Everything I've recorded so far has had very nice clarity, more than enough to use in a track.
Have fun with it           ~Airyck~
