i think each dj plays what he likes, and when his taste is the same as the crowd's, then the crowd loves him. that's why one dj is super in a country while he is not that respected in another etc. that's also what builds a dj's personality..
it's not a simple answer to what someone prefers i think. cos at this time i prefer this and at the other time i prefer something else. on a saturday evening i can go to a party and want to listen to the latest killer compilation and on another saturday night i can go to a party and want to listen to hallucinogen for example. so, it's not that simple! but generally a couple of well-known killer tracks in the set are essential to create a blasting crowd atmosphere, then the other tracks should be new stuff IMO, but still killer! hehe
p.s. i totally agree with the person who said that listening to his favourite tune at a party makes him go wild, i think we all have this. BUT, i personally have EXACTLY the same when i buy a cd and one of the tracks is the "killer-new-track" i heard at a party last week... "no shit! i've heard this track in that party! WOW!" hehe |

Well, a mixture of unreleased and released (btu new) music is ok - and put in an older (at least 2 years old) track every once in a while - this is sure going to put a smile on people's face.

I like to listen to more unheard music. I guess its cause with a track I have heard, i know where each tweak each sound is going to be heard so there is no element of suprise |

I play 99% new tracks because I want to expose people to fresh, new, different sounds from what they're used to |

hmmm where exactly is the boarder between a new and an old track ???
U deejays should also not forget that the crowd doesn't know the WHOLE MAJORITY of all the released stuff...
So just play what U truely like yourselves...

I only play the music that I truly like. Otherwise I would be betraying myself, and the crowd. And new music doesn't mean unreleased. New - recent stuff that most people haven't heard yet, by artists who are taking the music into a new direction. You don't need to play Bust A Move to get the crowd jumping, believe me.
besides, it's about growth, about mental exploration, not candy-coated fun, isn't it? It's up to the DJ to challenge the crowd, and if playing tracks from '95 is what's going to do it, then by all means! |

Ideally there'd be scads of new releases in my style But there aren't... so I play mostly obscure, older tracks...

i prefer to hear new music at parties..
things that i don't know..
well it sure fun to hear some of your favorite tracks in a party, but most of the time i want new music that i didn't hear yet , i have my favorites at home...
so i wanna hear something like 80% new music and 20% old..

This is exactly the contrary of what I meant hihihi, no problem... By old released stuff I was meaning everything excepts Super Classic Hits..
Something like the deejay smiling while the crowd is jumping on some 1998 night stuff, and thinking "hey dudes hehehe this is 5 years old... but still so stomping" ...
See what I mean ?
I liked Inu's answer, going in this way..
Cheers !
