If you dont know to play the piano 25 is enough.

I have the nocturn and the keybed is netter than maudio's, automap when it works is good.           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

Having a keyboard is cool, but definitely not necessary for producing electronic music.

I have one, I barely ever use it for production.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

now bout the number of octaves...

if u aint a key player and just want the keys to test sounds and sequencies etc etc... 25 s enough...

now if u are a keyboard player , or if u arent but want to lean to play it and record it directly from ur fingers...

49 s the way to go...

Nocturn is little less than 300 eu

For this money i would recommend you buy your self a keyboard with a synth engine on it

For example:

I would not suggest a 2 octave keyboard. Get a big one! It's much more comfortable to explore how this or that sound behaves on lower or higher notes.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I agree, i bought the axiom 25. And now i regret not getting a bigger one, even tough i can't play.

Ive never heard good things about MAudio, but more than a couple bad things. Most commonly I guess they break easy.

Ive had my mickroKONTROL for about 6 ish years, 4 faders have come off due to getting so into mixing i forgot it wasnt my old DJM, and need supergluing, but other than that Ive been more than satisfied.

They go for around 300 US, yeah, but, well, 6 years, its paid for itself in my opinion.

The half size keys arent the best for my fat fingers, but they're far from unplayable, but they do have a pretty loud buzz when released quickly.

But I guess the damage was done and MAudio laughs all teh way to the bank, again....

You really can't think of it like say, cheap shoes, with music gear you really do get what you pay for, and if you go cheap pretty soon youll end up spending more than you would have getting the good stuff, just repairing or replacing the crap. If you can, try hard to wait til you can afford the good stuff. You will be happy when its still kicking, years later           .

I like the microkorgs small sized keys, we did our entire first album on those keys, then we sold it. Now we're using yamaha dx7 as main keyboard. Which has normal size keys.
