For $1000 you can get a new processor (AMD 2600 at least), motherboard and 1GB memory... and maybe still have enough to get a soundcard.

The processor, mobo and memory is the most important thing for you though; if you just use plugins your soundcard will last you a bit longer.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Since you do all your processing internal, there will be no change in your sound...

i don t know how cubase "renders" to audio, but at least in logic u ll get a better quality if using vsti's. ( rendering in real-time, bad latency = bad sound ) n if u get a soundcard with good asio-drivers, your cpu can take more too = more voices = better quality.

i ve got an amd2700 with 1gb ram n works good.

I would say the priority list is:

1. Powerful computer.
2. Good speakers & amp.
3. Better sound card.
