Hi !
Lets say i have a song with kick, bass, leads and percussion in a track.
Which things and parameters do you automate to get interesting effects?
Thankful for any help |

Everything that needs automation
Some of the most basic things I do quite often:
Leads with automation on the cutoff (sometimes also decay, resonance etc). Some minor automation to make things a little bit more dynamic, and sometimes some more dramatic automation when introducing or cutting off the lead.
Pads with cutoff-automation to make them flow nicely in and out of the track. Some automation with a stereo-expander effect can also work really well on pads to either go from full stereo to mono - or the other way around.
Then of course there's also the overused filter-cutoff automation on the kick/bass group channel
There's countless possibilites really. DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Well it depends to what are you looking for, I'll say that experimenting with the different parameters will give you an idea of what sounds/Fx's you can get.
The overused filtering (Band Pass, High Pass & Low Pass Filters), as prOfane said is a good starting point to make transitions in your tracks.
Look after the Lfo's settings in your synths, that can give you nice moving sounds as well.
Volume automations in your tracks sometimes works well...
I'd say just be creative and if you have a controller at hand, try to tweak your parameters live, it's a lot more fun!!

First, I automate my hands to roll a fat one.
And besides already mentioned automation, I often automate the effects, like the amount of reverb (especially in breaks) or feedback of the delay.
Also, I like to automate the decay -whether it's a lead sound or a snare, for example.
But basically - I agree with pr0fane - anything that needs automation

OK. Let's talk about less common stuff you can automate... because cutoff and lfo rate is just everyday stuff.
Try automating:
- Arpeggiator time / range
- Portamento and release on a fast note lead
- LFO shape
- Trancegate floor / treshold
- Delay times
- OSC shape / symmetry
- modulator OSC pitch in FM / Synch modes
- Pulsewidth
- ModEnv depth on a pitch envelope
Stuff like that |

no one mentioned my favourite yet - flanger dry/wet, rate, and intensity all at once... bringing them all from high to low or vice versa, sounds like the lead is either slowly emerging from soaking wet shards of sound, or slowly being destroyed.
