They're controller surfaces you can use with software like Ableton Live so you aren't limited to a standard MIDI controller or keyboard/mouse. |

I've got an apc40 and it's great. I strongly recommend it to everybody using Ableton Live, but it completely sucks with any other DAW

I am totally getting a launchpad for my own live performances.. I really like the ability to re-sequence songs on the fly if you have things set up properly. I like the APC concept, but it's a little big to travel with.
