Make the track sound right with nothing on the master, you will get a much better result with the final mastered track if you give the engineer a clean mix with lots of headroom.

thats the best for leaving room for improvment at mastering,it s more safe depending the mixer experience.
a great mixer will try to not get his mix ruined ,he is not really looking for enhancement, or just small one..he prey his balance and color stay the same he worked hard for it..it s 2 different vision of mastering so he might leave less room depending the ME.
when possible ,if someone use a chain on the master bus ,i ask 2 versions , one with the stuff bypassed and choose the one i feel i can get the best result, also i get a clearer idea of what they are after

Well, as the multipressor preset i made by just tweaking enhanced my percussion and made the KB deeper, i ended up just putting a multipressor with the same preset on those three channels, the percs group channel and the Kick, and the bass.

Now my sound is about the same as it was when i just put one on the master.

I dont understand normal compression at all, but multipressors are a lot more visual, i start to get the hang of it, but just tweaking compression amount and the different parameters. i dont really understand shiz. i just tweak till it sounds good! YES

this is my crapbook user where i just update all the things i need feedback for!

1. Utility plugin - to check my mixes in mono
2. Limiter - That just prevents anything to go over 0db
3. Analyzer

+1.

@satori

you can leave the limiter on your master, just to keep preventing overshoots over 0db (altough the cubase master fader isnt that accurate. i would use a external peak meter).

whatever you feel youl like to .. sometimes my master channel is full and get automated for a part or some parts when making music. But why not put some lil bitcrusher from start to end, for the whole mix - for a different overall sound - colour or some other effect. Experiment is fun and can give own character.
I like to change between analyser & plug in meteres or tuners and modulation effects , sometimes this mofo slots are empty. I tend to never have a limiter on it though but consider to use it from soon on.

I agree with TimeTraveller. Unless you leave at least 0.5 db of headroom for mastering it is fine

Well, my single channel strips, NONE, peak to the red. But it peaks waaaaay over 0dB still, Won't a limiter flatten my track?            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

You can always turn down the individual channels, and pay attention to when and where in the track you redline the master. In my experience, there's just a buildup of certain frequencies that pushes things over the edge, find the ones that are causing the issue and find out what sounds are essential for that frequency and what aren't. But personally? I just keep it from clipping and export it with 3 DB of headroom by turning down all the groups by 3 db. If it doesn't seem loud enough, turn up your speakers.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Better to pull all faders down a bit. If u use a limiter on mixing stage, do it very carefully. Say, to catch occasional peak here and there with gain reduction up to 1 db max. But make sure u understand why u want that to happen.

A limiter
This has proven to be useful if experiments go wrong and you forgot to put one on the track where you are doing stuff           My first track:
