Hey homebros, so i totally realized the importance of putting shit on the main output. Here i was at a friends place, he was playing with his multipressor in a DJ program for iPad called "DJay" And so i had this sudden realizaton. "OMG I PUT ONE OF THOSE ON MY MAIN OUTPUT YES"

and so i did, and i looked up the presets, and i found a preset that only needed like, a little notch here and there, and what was left? The most instant bliss i have ever herd

oh, my god. So, tell me guys, what do you do with your main outputs?            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

I said I like it dirty, not muddy.

Don't put anything on your main. When you go to get the track mastered you will need to have the master empty. Get it sounding perfect with nothing on the master channel.

good l0rd, that means i'm better off laying a little slight compression here and there on group channels so that the main outout is clean?            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

1. Utility plugin - to check my mixes in mono
2. Limiter - That just prevents anything to go over 0db
3. Analyzer           www.psilocybian.com / www.facebook.com/psilocybian

^^ But then you will just have to take the limiter off when it comes time to send to the mastering studio.           .............................................

yes I do take it off, but I dont have to because my limiter is only a safeguard for my monitors and my ears I mix well under 0db and my master is never touching 0db           www.psilocybian.com / www.facebook.com/psilocybian

So what if the track sounds better with my Pultec, just a touch of Fairchild and L2 limiter on the master? Do I still need to remove them before mastering? Please, maybe at least bypass without removing?

On a serious note - just don't fuck the mix up with plugins. Master channel, individual track or group - doesn't matter.

But that is basically mastering, is it not? If someone sent me a track to master and it was limited or compressed I would send it back (And I could tell)           .............................................

Make the track sound right with nothing on the master, you will get a much better result with the final mastered track if you give the engineer a clean mix with lots of headroom.           .............................................

problem is guys that dont know what they are doing ,it's not puttin stuff on the master bus...that where this rule come from , dont put anyhting on your master bus cause it just make it worst at mastering to fix problems, there is a other rule that say fix it in the mix...mastering have become almost like fixing crappy mix..it should be about enhancing great mix !

a good mixer won t destroy his mix, if he decide to use something on the master it s cause it improve the sound not make it worst.

it s only comon sense to leave some room for the mastering engeinner to work specially if you re not sure about the mix but some guys don't and send bad mix at -10 rms, that why this rule exist

alos cause at mastering we like to use our tools cause we think we have the best one, so even if someone send us a great mix that dont need anyhting some ME wont be happy cause they can't squash it
