In Ableton's Operator you can choose how many harmonics your saw is going to have (all the way to 64).

does it come as a vsti ?

Most of Ableton's synth modules are written by AAS http://www.applied-acoustics.com/

Operator however was made by Robert Henke aka. Monolake http://www.monolake.de/technology/ableton_live.html so there is no available VST version.

Operator is my all time favorite for sound synthesis. Whenever I have an idea I want to lay down and need to create the sound, i'll use it: that includes SUPER DUPER MEGA HYPER SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS Saw's Oh yeah!

But each synth has it's unique sound, and sometimes other VST's or synths have a different way of doing things, allowing us to create different sounds, so I seldom go with other synths.. A little fella with a lot of power is Claw and Beast (which consists in TWO! Claws)

If I only had one synth, it would be Operator.

I would be surprised if there were any real differences between digital synths w.r.t. the sawtooth waveform in its pure form. The filters, on the other hand...

Although, I haven't tried any of the other company's synths. Operator keeps me busy.
Check out the Covert Operators site for tips and crazy presets.

About the VSTi question: there was something in Ableton's manual about ReWire. I don't remember anything about it, since Live is my only sound-making machine (so I don't need ReWire). But maybe there is a way to open Operator and ReWire Live into your host?

the truth is there is software that sound exactly the same as analog today.
For instance Electribe Sx sound the same on ipad as for instance my analog device in front of my nose.
The tube emulation sounds the very same. For sure not each synth is replaceable - but probably almost each.

Well I haven't found a softsynth yet which can sound as thick and stable as my Nord Rack's saw oscillator.
Even Uhe's ACE's SAW sounds like buzzing cardboard compared to my Nord.

on softsynths... I like synapse junglist, fxpansion dcam strobe and operator for some sounds.

no software can beat the nords and moogs saws.

Roland JD800, MS404 , MB33... so many.

In the end its also important which envelope and filter u use.

Sampling synths is a good practice since most 'synths' have a very limited envelope, where some like to have a aHdsr envelope

Trillian is nice, whould be kinda nice if you coild import your own samples

Something which I look interested forward to is Halion 4 . I hope the keep their Waldorf Filters

(You can put the all 6 saws together at the same time) , To Work , To Change ,
To get the 'Saw' touch & feeling in every sound you hear or made .

Ace saw to plastic soundind for my taste , i like it but not for everyhting but there is no best saw, it s what is the best saw for that sound... it all depends what sound you wanna make. even the virus that have a crapy saw for many can be good for some leads and pads,so best saw don t mean much, even a crappy one can be good for some sounds
