Hi everyone iam really new to maken music and ive got cubase5 and everyone is telling me to get a soundcard and not use the onboard sound on my motherboard? Its funny they say that because when i installed cubase5 and Komplete 6 my sound went to shocking quality updated drivers and stuff and still the same thing anyways.

can any one recommend some good soundcards for me and tell me the Specs i should be looking at? i got my eyes on a Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 DELUXE PCIe soundcard is it any good. like from my understanding you really only need a soundcard when it comes time to render a track like to record a track ? is that right and to hear the true potential of something as small as a hihat to a bass kick in music software?

You do not need a sound card for track rendering as it's done purely on the CPU.

A sound card (a real pro one, not some Asus stuff) will allow you to reduce latency, get better sounding connections to your monitors and when recording stuff using cables, etc.

PCI is internal. USB and FireWire are portable.
I'd go for USB over FW today, since FW seems like a dead technology.

How many ins and outs?

Ins are for recording stuff. Microphone, guitars, hardware synths, a dj mixer.
