No you are quite right. Less is often more. I would just add to put the max at -0.3dB (instead of -0.1dB) And I would filter out everything below 20Hz.

Of course if you really know what you are doing and you have the right monitoring and accoustics, you can go further. But in doubt, restraint is the best option.

Why 0.3 and not 0.0 max ? I mostly use 0.0 max for maximal loudness.            Signature

I think it's because some 'older' mastering processors see 0.0 dB as a clipping signal and will generate errors.

If i finish a track and it has -15 RMS Db (without limiting or compression or the master) is it loud enough or does it still need to be mastered?

thanks

Because that is the value of the highest sample, not the value of the highest peak! You can easily have two samples just below 0dB that together form a peak above 0dB. I think it is called interpolation overshoot but I'm not entirely sure.

These overshoots will usualy make the D/A converters distort slightly. I've been analyzing some commercial CDs (not just trance) and sometimes the interpolation overshoot can be up to +1dB! I now use -0.4dB as a max. Seems like a good trade-off.

Joao, most released stuff is arround -10 dB RMS these days. So you are nearly at half the loudness! (6dB). So you might want to add a bit of compression/limiting to mix it in with released tracks.

thanks UnderTow!

I read somewhere that about -14Db was the top for most audio

maybe they we're just considering POP records or just a bit outdated (i think was future music) since stuff apparently coming out louder and louder.

thanks           roll a joint or STFU :)

the problem with 0.0 is that most digital equipment will say that your audio is clipping if you reach 0.0 (the lights will go red).

There's a standard to when the led will light. In some systems it's if the samples ever reach 0.0, in more advanced systems it's when 3 contiguous (near each other) samples reach 0.0.

Hi to all..
I wonder what do u guys do if you want to play your tracks at a party..Do u use a maximazer,to bring the level up,so u can mix it with released tracks? Do u use a limiter? Or u just burn the audio export from your sequencer plain?

thanx

when i play my tracks, it is mostly live audio coming straight from cubase. just like i do while mixing, i only have mastering limiter (mostly TLsMaximizer because, unlike Waves, it introduces no latency) and set it up that i peak at -0.3 dB, and that average RMS of the track is about -12 dB. you can check that if you download a 'RMS Buddy' freeware vst plugin, very handy thingie. and the people dancing on the last party my friend and me played live said the tracks ROCKED. i did not want to argue with them           http://myspace.com/voxproject

because some sound system limiters and also some cd players might get confused. it is always better to reduce the maximum, and i (and a lot of other mastering engineers) really reccomend that you set your maximum to -0.5 to -0.1 dB. and anyway, you will not gain much by that 0.2 or 0.3 dB of gain. you better put an eq before limiter filtering out everything below 30-40 Hz, you can get even up to 1.5 dB more of headroom.           http://myspace.com/voxproject
