Hi to all..
I wonder what do u guys do if you want to play your tracks at a party..Do u use a maximazer,to bring the level up,so u can mix it with released tracks? Do u use a limiter? Or u just burn the audio export from your sequencer plain?
thanx |

no, i use limiter, multibandcompressors and maximier, to pump up my export. i think without this sort of "mastering", your track doesnt have the change to survive at a party between the other other tracks.

ps: dont forget the dithering tool, to convert your file into the right bitrate !!! |

A good mix and export the track from your sequencer in a wave format. And play it
Maybe add a good compressor to the master channel...
Good luck

Just fix some frequencies in your track also the stereo etc and then write them on a cd.

You can check the frequency spectrum of your finished track and compare it with the spectrum commercial track (using the Waves PAZ spectrum analyzer for example). Make sure it has about the same frequency profile, by looking for the ratio of the bass frequencies to the rest of the frequencies and looking for the linearity of the frequencies of 500 Hz. and up. It can be a good idea to roll off frequencies below 20-30 Hz. by using a "mastering quality" eq (like LinEq, Voxengo GlissEq, Eqium). Then you can use a (multiband) limiter, like the L3 Multimaximizer by Waves to make your mix a bit louder, but check the manual to know what the controls do before you use it.
This isn't really mastering of course, but it can make your track sound better then the raw mix on a large soundsystem. |

Boobytrip is right
U can also check the ultramaximizer L series of WAVES... There is a preset that says "Pre-Mastering".
It gives a boost to your track but with out making it reaching to unwanted lavels...
But have this in mind... All these have to be done very carefull and knowing what u r doing.
Do not send a track to a label with all these added to your track. Here we are just talking about for your own benefit to play the trax.

sure its nice to add some volume n warmth to your mix down but from what i learened a good mix sounds better with nothing on it
has a lot of space n its not pressed like if u use the l2 series n even if u do, do it gentelly.

i usually do this:
-Voxengo Soniformer2 (Big Mix Presset)
-Voxengo Curve eq (Vintage mastering presset)(you must compare the line frequencies with a pro mastered song file and ajust the equalizer)
-Waves Stereo Imager (open a little bit the stereo)
-Voxengo Soniformer2 again (mastering presset)
-Waves Rcomp (matering electro firm or soft presset) (compressing just a little bit)
-Kjaerhu Master Limiter (for loadness)
*obs: the song in first place. dont compress a lot.
this is not a pro mastering, but sounds good |

what i usually do is open the finished track (by that I mean that it is already a stereo, well mixed wav rendered file) on cubase; any other program with dxi and asio would be fine too.
then, apply the plugin ozone isotope and play around with the wav and this plugin for a while. The plugin is great, 6 in one i think: master eq, multiband compressors, mastering reverb, harmonic exciters, volume maximizer and stereo image enhancers. Plus i think there is a re-version out there...
If youre carefull and dont exagerate with the features too much, you can have a good quicky-mastering in a few minutes. Really boosts things up without generating distortion. Yep, pro mastering is the real thing, but if you have something just cooked up and want to play it quicky-mastering can really help. And this plugin is really practical. |

i would keep it as simple as possible. a bit of L1 (or L2 or L3, but i only got waves 3.6) is all that u need if you want to check your first mix -let's say- of your track.
set the out ceiling to -0.1 and start lowering the threshold. if you lower the threshold to -3.1 you have made your track 3dB louder. but be careful, if you find that you need to set the threshold lower than -6 (in order to make your track as loud as the others) or you see the attenuation meter going lower than around -4, then there's smth wrong with your mix and you should try a better mixdown.
i hope i am not wrong on this one, cos that's what i do...

Not everything. U will need limiting always to get ur track loud enough.
