hahahaha I have way more money than you do? You are the one not getting it.. YOU GET PAYED TO STUDY..
here, we have to PAY to study... 1100 reais is my uni.. Since things are more or less the same price, except you pay in euro and we pay in reais (as in the coca cola example), its as if you had a deficit at the end of the month of 1100 euro, instead of GAINING 400 euro or howhever much you said you gain |

a couple of years ago when my family was fucked up with money, I had to work like a slave to pay my uni.. waking up 5:30 am every single day, going to uni, studying, facing fking traffic to get to work, working like hell, leaving only at 8pm, only to face traffic and go back home.. Practically no time to have lunch, study after uni, to do my exercise.. and that was to get exactly as much as my uni costs..
so me at that time: uni+slave work = 0 cost in terms of uni
you: uni + nothing = 400 euro in your account
you think I bought cds at the time? not at all.. now I do.. quite a lot, because I have money again thankfully and I like originals.. Does this mean I stop downloading? no.. as I said, downloading made me buy much more music |

R$5 a pint is 1.5€ a pint. I pay 5€ a pint which would be 17R$. A price of a cd 20€/70R$ is 4 pints to me. A price of a cd 20€/70R$ is 14 pints to you. So yeah you pay 10 pints more for a cd. Yes it does sound quite much, the same if I'd pay 70€ for that same cd. 70€ however is 1/6th of my montly money. And again I'm 160€ short of even paying my rent with my 404€. How many € or R$ do you make in a month?

Sorry traveller, but I have to ask you.
Since you are "Uber poor" how did you manage on your study grant to get the computer you where so proud of the latest specification:
CPU: AMD64 3500+ (Socket 939)
MB: ABIT AV8 (2000Mhz System Bus)
GPU: MSI Geforce nx6600GT 128Mb GDDR3 ram
HDD: 160Gb Serial Ata
RAM: 1.5Gb 400Mhz DDR Ram in Dual Channel
TV: Hauppauge PVR 150 Tv tuner Card
NETWORK: 1000Mb/100Mb/10Mb Network Card
SPEAKERS: Logitech x-530 5.1
SOUNDCARD: Realtek AC'97 5.1
DISPLAY: 19" BenQ TFT (8ms, 700:1, 300cdm2, 170/150 viewing angles)
ADDITIONAL:
Logitech Dinovo Media Desktop Keyboard (Bluetooth)
Logitech Dinovo Media Pad (Bluetooth)
Logitech MX900 mouse (Bluetooth)
Hauppauge IR Remote
Some semi new Canon Printer
About a billion USB & USB2 and Firewire ports
LG DVD Rom
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Doom 3
Halflife 2
Reason 3.0
I bet every poor person in the 3rd world can find the money for a computer like that.
You can waste your money spending €50 in an evening in a bar and get a badass computer because you know that money will come to you.
If you are starving your parents will help you, if you can't afford a computer, drivers licnese and maybe even a car your parents will help you.
Thats the case for a lot of people in rich countries anyway.
So it's easy to spend the last €20 on a CD without a worry in the cozyness of socially secure Finland.
When you know that €20 will get you food for a month and you don't know if you get more coming in eventually it's a different story.

You're drooling aren't you? I think of it as a fairwell present when I moved away from home. I know my parents wont let my starve, but you know what, I'm not going to let it to come to that either. Figured it would be pretty lame to move away from home and still live on your parent's money..

nope.. . 5 reais a pint and 5 euro a pint is the same thing... Just as you pay 3-4 euro for a coca bottle, we pay 3-4 reais for it too (averagely).. most things are like this.. if you want to know how much it is for us, just change the currency straight away...
So again, its as if you would be paying 60 euro a cd, maybe more, depending on the cd..
you said yourself that you dont pay your rent, so how can you be short of money from the rent?
again I say.. you get payed to study.. here we have to pay for studying... instead of a plus, we have a minus.. and in my case, doing ´straight conversion´, it would be a huge minus for me (as if it was like 1100 euro minus for you, instead of 404 plus for you)
how much to I make a month? nothing now.. I quit my job now.. I was making 1100 reais.. Which in normal conversion is like 306 euro, but in ´straight´ conversion would be 1100 euro (but it all went to my university.. not even one cent left)..
now my dad got a job and pays for my university.. I live in my grandfather´s house, and I get the food here... My ´job´ now, where I get ´change´ money by fixing computer of old ladies and friends of my family, just enough for me to go out once a week maybe, or to get a bus to friend´s house during the day.. I dont know how much I get from this ´computer fixing´ exactly, though.... |

just one note.. my 1100 reais job was actually a rarity in brazillian terms.. almost nobody in my age does that..Actually almost nobody in any age does that.. in average, a lot of people live with a lot less than that... there are some people who have to feed and care for their whole family and all the bills with 200 reais a month or so... I was really really lucky |

1100 r = 320€
So if you paid 20€ for the cd you would still have 300€ left. Now If I paid 70€ for the cd I would have 334€ left. Now Finland is atleast on average 5 times more expensive country than Brazil. So basicly my 334€ would be 70€ or 241R there..
Do you get my point at all? Yes I feel very lucky that we've got only free universities here. They've free for you too. They're free for everyone who qualifies. Brazil could have all this if you had as high income taxes and such, but you don't..

heh? how is finland 5 times more expensive? thats because you are translating the money in monetary ´official´ terms... Didnt I just tell you that for a ´real´ idea of how much things cost, you have to do ´straight conversion´, which means 1 real=1 euro?
that means it would not be 5 times more expensive...
you got universities that not only are free, but you get payed.. thats pretty unreal here...
Brazil could have this? Well, I doubt... I mean, taxes here are pretty high.. can you help me find some link with income taxes of around the world? I remember hearing that Brazil was one of the highest ones in the world...
and here, the situation and corrupt politics are too fucked up, I doubt that increasing income taxes would help in anything.. plus, there are many more urgent problems that have to be solved before that..
But anyway, im sure you know you cant compare countries so straight... each has a very very different situation, history, potentials, cultures, etc..
edit: yes indeed very offtopic.. sorry isratrancers, forgot you dont like off topic.. let me just wait for a traveller answer and I dont continue with this anymore.. maybe we do this somwehere else traveller... |

Dude if you pay 4R for a bottle of coke that's 1.1€ So you could buy almost 300 bottles with your 300€.
I pay 4€ or 14R for a bottle of coke so I could buy only 80 bottles here. Okay that's only 3 times more expensive but coke is actually quite cheap here compared to some other products.. like cigarettes for example..
and income taxes.. here it depens how much you earn. the more you earn the higher the taxes. on average it's just a little bit less than 50%. and the corporate taxes are a thing of their own. nokia is probably paying half of finland..
