Maybe I'm doing something wrong here, but I have really tried all timestretching options within Cubase, but the outcome always sounds totally unnatural.
Even just slightly stretching a reversed cymbal to fit my track, sounds very grainy and aliased.
Any tips, or should I be looking for something else to do my timestretching with? |

indeed the algos for time stretching are not so good, there are some excellent and very expensive plugins ive heard once that are very good on time stretching but cannot remember the name atm, on Nuendo i usually stretch very very small amounts of the waveform, by un-clicking the quantize button and little by little time stretch it till the desirable length
I think also that it work better, or with less loss of the original waveform when working with longer waveforms like pads, speeches and big sounds generally,, small sounds like a kick etc are so easy to be messed after stretching them the wave is changing so drastically, into some bad probably and unwanted sound
try the very small stretching, also zoom the most you can so to have better view of the small areas, maybe will help

try changing the algorithm, you are probably using 'standard' men you should be using 'mpex' at a polyphony of 4. Let us know if anything changed for the better.

Thanks, I tried but the results weren't any better than before.
I think I should be looking for some 3rd party plugins to get the job done. |

try Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch. Its free and pretty good!
http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/
Works alot better for stretching crashes etc than cubase. You can even stretch them 50 times if you want and it still sounds pretty good. |

Yep, SX3 came out in 2004...it's now 2009 and pushing 2010...That could have something to do with it. Maybe it's time to upgrade
