Or what's the most preferred?
Original recordings
WAVS
mp3
ADAT
I'm just tired to be on the mix and that one song has less quality than others. |

If its the medium you're referring to then, Compact Disk's I would assume are the most preferred. So none of the above apply.
I have seen very few DJ's mixing of Laptops using "Wave" or "MP3" files. "Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience" |

CD's and Vinyl are preferred. Many DJ's use mp3's burned to cd, but on a good PA soundsystem they sound like shit. |

Everthing, but use not vinyl. Its so bad bad quality.
If you use mp3, use a high bitrate, at least 192 Kbps.

Formats in order of sound quality:
DAT: No longer used so much due to difficulty in beatmixing, also because CD-R media are much cheaper now than when DAT was popular. However it is 48kHz, which allows for a slight amount more headroom than CD, and a slightly better sound.
CD: Most popular by far. Despite the fact that DATs have a slightly better sound quality, most music is mastered for CD these days, which means the original digital recording is usually in 44.1kHz, so this will be the most authentic reproduction of the mastered audio.
Vinyl: No longer popular due to weight, and a lack of tracks published on it. Sound quality is inferior to CD, due to the fact that the lower frequencies must be compressed and mixed down to mono so that the groove is not too wide. This is what gives the vinyl a 'warm' sound, which is actually an undesired side effect.
MP3s: Even at 320kbps, MP3s lack detail in the frequencies. At 320kbps approximately 50% of the audible sound has been removed from the track, however as these sounds are not easily noticable no-one will notice until the quality drops to about 192kbps, where approximately 80% of the sound has been removed. While this is good for home listening, on a large system it is giving you an inferior sound.
Bottom line: If you really must have MP3s, then don't ever take them out to DJ with. Have a bit of respect for yourself as a DJ and your music. Buy originals, or get CD-Rs of music straight from the artist or labels. |
