hi m8s!!
i'm struggling about having a solid bass in some chillout tunes i'm writing

I started with sine waves on most capable logic's synth (es2)
but it's something not even worth listening
or it's too deep in sub octaves
or it's too distorted adding any kind of FM or distortion even sublte.

the aim must be some C.B.L. style bass, not too mild in the mid high- not too subby

it's difficult i know

Have you tried layering two oscillators? Or even two different synths? That way you can have a sine wave on one and a saw or whatever on the other. With some careful filter tweaks and some eq to make them fit well together you can get a decent mid with plenty of oomph which you can adjust as you want           www.soundcloud.com/vonoom | www.vonoom.bandcamp.com | www.facebook.com/vonoom | www.flikflakfamily.com

Kinda hard to answere your question, I'd say a chillout bass can be almost of any kind.(even cbl have many different kinds)

Could you show some examples of what you mean?

personally i like to think there isn't really form to chillout and such types music. so in that case i really fancy having a sine wave turned up. maybe layerd and various envelopes depending on the track. it sounds really good, deep, and ambient. thats my take on it.           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

hey PsyGalaXy
arghh I got the same problem
If I use a saw wave the bass has too many harmonics and it's too bright..if I eq it removing a lot of freq it sounds strange to my ears (maybe I should eq with more attenction)

I don't like how triagle waves sounds
Sine waves are ok but we should add something else maybe??

any tips guys?

Well,if you into that kind of bass, many dubstep dudes who do that really low bass actually use triangle. It has similar sound of sine in that really low end,but with a little grit.Has few harmonics so you can go subtractive with it.You can lowpass the sucka to get similar to sine result but with a bit of presense.

Why don't you like the triangle wave dude?:(

hey jekvan
maybe because it has few harmonics, saw has too many so I think I should use something in between

ok I will look more into triagle then, maybe it's just matter of eq

Well, there are always plugs that add harmonics..

As a matter of fact,I started some psy-dubtep track some time ago,and I used triangle with...hmm....I think it was some Oxford plugin (limiter I think..or was it inflator?) to "overdrive" the bass, and that thing adds some harmonics.

Something very nice came out of this,so you should check it out.It sounds like the sine wave bass, but with a bit of "rrrrrrrrr".

Try a fin wave instead of a triangle            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Try using a Synth with filter drive, this might add some warmth.           http://facebook.com/ansolas

My upcoming ambient album has an electric bass sample in one of the tracks, I love it !
