sounds okay to me. you might can improve it with a sidechain compressor. and some slight bass harmonizing like waves maxbass or voxengo lf-punch, but seriously it got already enough low frequencies in your sample. another neat little trick is to use a multiband compressor on a group, route both kick and bassline to it and only compress lower frequencies. could give you more punch. but again, the sample you provided doesn't really need it.
I didn't run it through an analyzer but I think this kick/bass combo will sound fine after post production.
just keep going, practice, experiment and don't forget to have fun doing it.

Sounds fine to me, but then it depends what kind of bass you would want. I definatly would make small spaces between the bass notes, it makes it more faster sounding.

its always hard to judge bass and kick on their own.
the idea is that a whole track should blend, concentrating on just the bass and kick will not do much good... i know it, sure they need their own care but no idea to exaggerate, eventually you will add stuff that will need space aswell so just
get it all fleshed out and then you can judge whats too much and too little of.... or if the timbre is wrong or what else..
try to mix percs and kick&bass combo
add synthlines, pads and so on till you have a rough mix, then listen for stuff that collide, and decide what you want or can sacrifice for better sound. mute stuff and listen if it still sounds good, is everything needed for the part you are working on, arrangement cant be too crowded, maybe you need to strip stuff, find places that you can fill instead of forcing stuff.
Of course you can add stuff in which order you feel like, try to think of the focal point of the track? is it the percs, or the bass or the kickdrum, or a leads, or is everything smoothly blended and just some FX that stick out or other sounds here and there.... ect ect
i say bypass EQ and Comp, get the rest done and save this time consuming task for later...
remember that you cant pollish a turd, well you can but you will never get it to sound like you want to...
find the right pitch combinations and decide if bass should be on top or below the kickdrum,
also if you have a deep kick and bass ontop and you find that the kicks precense gets burried you can try to boost the kick in the 4000hz region... or at least around there...
focus on making the pockets very narrow, this often means small and fine adjustments, sweeping slow and finding the right spots..
in this case your kick is on top of the bass, the bass is low... what you dont want is to seperate them too much casue then they wont sound as a unit, but of course its all about what kind of sound you are looking for...
good luck and keep tweaking..

to increase to "punchiness" i found it quite useful to add a _Little_ bit of distortion in the higher frequencies. |
