What pots and fader setup could you not live without?

I use Cubase and I've had a Novation Remote SL for 5 years and I've never been a fan of Automap. It never really worked properly and whenever I got it half-working I could never decide what I wanted to use the controls for for that I wasn't faster using with a mouse.

In the last 4 months since I purchased Cubase 5 I haven't even been bothered to reinstall automap.

Now I constantly feel like I'm missing a bit of the human touch. So - I need to steal someone else's ideas!

- To those using an SL with Automap - Do you use it often, where? Was it easy to set up? (I haven't tried in Cubase 5, but in SX it went wrong constantly and frustrated the hell out of me)

- Question to everyone. If you have a standard midi controller with a few knobs and faders - what essential mappings do you have set up that you literally couldn't live without? Either because they're fun, useful, provide a great effect??

Any help getting me excited about the SL and some possibilities would be great. I'm on the verge of selling it unless I find something fun and useful to ues it for when making music.

Thanks!

set the faders for mixer volume, is it possible to set it so whatever channel that is highlighted is possible to tweak, with my yamaha Aw1600 i can do like that, so i can use one fader for everything as long as its highlighted..

Then i guess you use the knobs for Vst synths And FX tweaks..
Start, stop and rewind/forward buttons...

i guess it can be useful, but midi is sometimes so hard to finetune, too much stepping.. Analog gear is tha shit
give me SSL mixer and 2 more synths and a drum machine... and of course 48channel audio interface

Though i could live without any of this stuff, just a guitar and a nice doumbek

We use it mostly for live's. Not so much in the production phase but sometimes you want to control different filters and knobs on a synth without the mouse. It's pretty easy to set up all though we have a nocturn now a SL.

The transport controls are pretty handy too. I might install the latest automap 3 and give it another go.

hi tomos,

gotta say, thats exactly what happens to me. iŽd rather use my mouse. only thing i use the remote for is for automation recording..

but then i always use the learn function, assign two knobs and record my synthline or whatever..

and then my cubase 4 almost freezes during the recording although my cpu is not that slow.. actually i would only need a controller with two knobs that is assigned to the two parameters i used last.. that would be fast and convinient. click on res and cutoff and bam there you go.

also thinking about selling that thang..           http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/stereofeld-frequenzwechsel

Do you think you can solve your CPU issue?

Hve you tried the CPU afinity trick, since I installed Win7, I've had to have the Afinity checkbox ticked on my UAD card, otherwise I get 100% spikes and dropouts.

I use my RemoteSL 25 for performances.
I setup individual layout every time, with some parameters being the same (volume, eq, etc.)
I don't use automap, since I like setting it up manually.           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

Cutoff, Rez, Filter env amount, filter env decay, filter type, fm amt, FM OSC pitch, with the knobs

Lfo 1 and 2 amount and speed, and then various FX on the rest of the faders thats how i usually set it up, i even have a piece of masking tape along the top of my midi controller reminding me of whats what xD           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]
