Yep, b-notes and fuck-ups can be great fun... I saw Orbital live at the Roskilde festival 2000 I think - maybe 1999. At one point their sequencer stopped, and only two sounds kept playing - the ones the Hartnoll had their fingers on at that moment. One brother Hatnoll kept playing, and I think he actually took over for the other b. Hatnoll who began fixing the setup at the same time...

The playing bro began fiddling around, and playing some well-known pop tune with a sample that came back half an hour later in a crazy rearrangement of one of their own tracks.. while laughing at the top of his lungs of course. Apart from the amazing musicianship, it added a sense of "fuck machines let's party on", and when the sequencer was ready, they blended in the interupted track again - almost seamlessly, without missing a beat - cool stuff.

When Der Dritte Raum plays live, it's done with two seperate unsynced setups - one takes over when a track blends into another one, and it's really cool to hear phasiness, when the tempo isn't completely matched between the two setups. The transition phase between the two tracks is usually minute-long, and creates a pretty damn spaceship-warp-feeling... Masters at work!

can i ask something ??
i think you can also play live using flstudio or cubase running the most important audio (kicks basslines drums)prerecorded and then as many midi channels you want to your hardware synths drums etc.. and manipulate them in real time or even play stuff with them in real time
i think its going to be prety live i guess isnt it??

(you can midi dump to change tracks in real time aswell)

yeah, i had a friend that did exactly that, he laid out an hour long set out in logic (just midi) and just messed with sound the whole time.

on one end of the spectrum you have people who have finished tracks all laid out in order and press play, on the other end you have people who go on stage with nothing and write every pattern and create every sound on the fly. it's all considered 'live', but i can't say i have much respect for those that press play and maybe mess with a bit of eq. as i'm sure those who create everything on the fly don't have much respect for someone like me who plays with pre-written midi loops.

then again, i don't know how much it maters to the general audience, if at all. i guess just use what works for you, and try to keep as much control as you can.

The first live set we did as Locrian, we did with two sessions of fruity loops, not synced to anything. And had two people on keyboards. I didn't really do anything.

By the next set, one of the people left and it was just two of us. We'd moved to Cubase for the live set, but were still using fruity to compose. We set up some midi stuff for the nord, and played the backing tracks as wavs.

We moved to a cubase / nord / rewire environment after that for composing, and our sound changed quite a lot, and we spent a lot of time writing a whole lot of brand new material.

Then after that, I started dropping stuff out of the backing tracks and having the nord do more, and Barry was tweakin' and playing live keys as well. I still wasn't doing much in the live set.

Now I have moved to Logic for composition. Live set is Logic / Virus / Nord / 2 cd decks and mixer / 16 channel desk.

My old job for the live set was putting all the arrangements together, and then to stand around, smoke, drink and keep an eye on it for any stuff ups. Now I do more.

It's a lot more dynamic, but not dynamic enough. Eventually, it will be. But it's a process.

I don't care about doing anything live. I spend hours writing a track and during the process I make countless decisions about what goes where. The way I finish a track is the way it should sound, there is therefore no room for any changes at the moment it is played in public.

I'd like to simply turn off the lights of the DJ booth, put in a CD with my tracks mixed and let it play for 74 minutes. Leave the crowd with themselves and the speakers. There is nothing to see. My work was in my studio for weeks and months. When there is a public to listen to my tracks, I have no more work to do. They need not stare at me while they listen to my music.

Live music is disappearing. The concert, a invention of the 17th century, is disappearing.

Sorry for this big reply but this topic take my attention ... there are so many points of view as people in this forum....but i this word LIVE ACT has become so controversial and i think was invented to make some diference between people who play others artists music (called DJ`s) and artist themselfs who plays their own music... so the problem begin when some people without resourses to play ALL in LIVE...start to play with the less....(just a computer.... or maybe less...a cd)...but it cannot be anounced as dj set ...so it fits into the LIVE title....so the problem is that we need tons of titles to describe each kind of LIVE....
as:
XXXXXXX (Live set without any playing)
XXXXXXX (Live act with some filters in live)
XXXXXXX (Live set with some part of keyboards in live)
XXXXXXX Live act with EVERYRHING in live (doesn`t include 32th drums and samples of Lord of ther rings or Matrix).....
And the list can be huge....

But same as important is the money fact.... supposing you manage to have a band to play Live Act all in Live...like in the old times ; )= ... that way play and earn resources to keep sustain the project will become very hard... because usually party promoters don`t want to pay a lot for LIVE ACTS.... and this kind of LIVE is gonna be damn expensive for sure(lots of hardware, software, money to pay talented musicians as part of the act,a lot of jamings with a lot of people) ...when djs earn less money and people in most cases doesnt notice any diference even dj`s beat lives in making people dance (these are typical promoters words)....
Now imagine a 15 years old kid (average age to start making music) at head of this kind of project ....i don`t think he can handle it too much time ... maybe if he`s rich... so i think he needs first to start step to step .. with the basics of playing one instrument .. and then handling other instruments, other musicians , etc ..till he can make an impressive LIVE ACT circus type...( i hope no lions in there) :@LOL:@
So ...as musicians we usually want to play no matter our age ... or money or so...and maybe not dealing with jamings....discusing with a lot of people for points of view....expending all the money in equipment ....that`s the special thing of the trance music....that you can made your own music alone.... with the less.... expressing yourself all the way ....without depend on no one but you.....
So in the stage is the same.... what happen if you want to play all alone...all in LIVE ....IT`s IMPOSSIBLE....the only thing you can do is two hands (not so much talking of trance music)...

But the problemis that there`s a lot kind of LIVE ACTS....
in one side we have a guy playing with just his computer in winamp ...let`s say.... this guy earn two or three bears and a pizza in the party for his LIVE...
and in the other side ....6 or 10 or 20 guys playing trance ALL IN LIVE (as Hilightribe for example)....wich live is too expensive for regular partyes (just in plaine tickets and viatics ...its a lot of money...plus the cost of his LIVE)

So as i wrote before....maybe what we need is to put more specific titles in the party promotion so peolple can know the diference ...but i don`t thing that can be possible...for convenience of the artists and promoters....couse i don`t think people who play less don`t deserve to play ...maybe they deserve less money that`s all....
and that`s the point in a simple formula....
LESS MONEY LESS LIVE....MORE MONEY MORE LIVE
This is in optimal circunstances but not always this formula is aplicable ....a lot of artist want a lot of money for playing nothing ...or viceversa....so this is an endless discusion....

But i will conclude putting myself as example....
we start with no resources just a desktop pc and software...so we realize we need more than that to stat playing... so we bought a laptop and midi contollers...and that was enought at the begining...we usually play some melodies , chords or fx ...filters...eq...volume...change patterns...etc...
but we can do just two or three things at the same time...
And we cant handle more than 16 or 24 trax per song...
and usually one track needs more than that...(WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LIVE DON`T WE?)
So then we buy another laptop so we can divide the song... and if possible we play with a Nord or Similar.... always midi controller with faders (mixer style) for controlling the base via midi....
But now we need more hands.... (WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LIVE DON`T WE?)
Now we`re planning to incorporate another(s) person(s) into the project to help us to handle all parts...
But there are some parts (especially leads) who can`t be played in live for the precision of the strike at hi speed...or the sample voices from movies...for example..
So i have to admit our live can`t be played ALL in LIVE .... we don`t have enough recourses yet to do it ... but that`s why we have a small cost to play now... to earn resources to make a better live every time but at leat now we`re trying to offer something to the people in the dancefloor who pay his ticket more than do anything...
Also good lives can be done almost only in big parties (there are all the elements as good audio, security, money, etc)...couse we can`t risk our equipment in small parties when no security is contempled...bad audio system...risky voltage ....maybe it`s raining and the equiment is getting wet... or the promoter gives you almost no money couse it`s a small party.... then we can`t play ... and we can say no to play cause people are waiting for us and pay to hear us... they doesn`t matter a lot of things...so it`s better dj set in that cases... but the promoters announce it as LIVE ...and we have a problem here....
So the judge i let it to the peolpe...what is LIVE ACT what is not...all i know is that every party we made something diferent and special for that ocasion...and we try to do our best to transmit the people our feelings and to take them to fly...and i think that`s the point ...no matter what you play but what you do to the people with your music...so honestly i prefer to hear one chord at the right place played for a guy with his oxygen than see pagannini playing in the stage at 148 with a Virus C in one and a Nord Lead 3 in the other....i mean ...is what make me feel good ...not what it looks good to the visual impact...of course it`s important but not the most...

That`s my personal point of view ...play what you want but play it with the soul...and try to do it better every day...you can foolish peolpe but not yourself...and you`ll find rewarding do something that come to your head in the stage...you can play with people heads....that`s the funny part of the LIVE ACT...

Respect for everyone who made and play music ...It`s a way of life

i have seen lots of... “lives“ that as sharigrama said is not really necesary to get al wet sweating because u are playing a 32 keys at 148 hahahah.... lots of the best artists (sorry for) like gms... i know they just move some filters... and maybe riktam is eq the console while bansi press a key for a pad... like 1 minute and filter it... what ever i love them!!! because they interact with the ppl... and ppl are shocked at everymoment... probably thats what many of the ppl replied... wants to say... i dont mind if some one plays... 40 times just a key and then he go and eq for 2 minutes... possibly the most important thing playing is the way u drive the ppl with ur own energy... ¿am i xpressing myself right?... and for giving a example... few days ago i saw raja ram playing his dj set... one of the worst i heard in my life... but man!!! that guy up there just drive everyone even me nuts with his energy and etc!!!... the gms“live“ and as i tought... few keys... just some... “action“ at the equipment but isnt the music worth it?... i could go and see gms every 4 months just because... the way the drive the ppl with the tracks they sequence is KILLINg ME!!!

nice one hahha... i will read this soon to laugh of the way im talking hahaha... for sharigrama... they are really live!!! dudes haha check them out... not everytime some one go and plug their equipment then starts to go nuts in the stage and ppl loves that (thats what i learned) and so... my congrats to the ones who make that too...
